I'd want to join the navy. Not only because I enjoy being on the water, but because it's the safest branch to join when the people we seem to have the most conflict with are in some middle eastern desert.

So you want to join the branch that had to go find and kill Osama bin Laden (who was nowhere near water)?

I didn't say I wanted to be a SEAL. I'm not Jesse Ventura. A close friend of mine's dad was in the Navy and he's short and potbellied. He was a ship's cook. He has a very good retirement pension and he got to sail around the world. What's not to like. Hell, even I could do that.

Also, anyone else notice the spelling of "branch"? Tongue

Aaaaargh... I hate that you can't edit polls. Angry
I read "branches" everywhere, so I thought the singular would be "branche".
But thanks for the information.

The Navy SEALS are a special forces unit, which can't be joined by everyone.
Saying you have top joint he SEALS is like saying you have to become a fighter pilot if you want to join the Air Force.

I am aware of that. I'm not the one who seems to think joining the Navy means you never have to do anything on dry land...

All this thread proves is that the native born white American will no longer fight.

Mark my words, if there's another big war, the Mexicans are going to be like the Irish during the Civil War.

I am Mexican-American, cabrón. I just don't want to die in a stupid foreign war. Presumably, I'd be drafted to work for some bureaucracy, which wouldn't be so bad.

Is there "if I have to be drafted, can I apply for an commission?" program? Serious question. Because in that case I'd sign up for the Navy, else probably the Air Force.

lol simfan you'd be hazed out of the officer's core in approximately five second. you've made 3-4 paragraph long posts about proper attire in formal settings...

speaking of getting a cushy bureaucracy job, can you get drafted into JAG corps? that wouldn't be so bad. I'd even still get the cool uniform!

Well, would it be any better with the enlisted men? Indeed, I dare say what you mention is part of the appeal!

Your face when you're saying "enlisted men":

Simfan as an Army grunt in a platoon full of public school-educated blue-collar guys from rural Tennessee and Nebraska would probably make for an interesting reality show. Or at least a suitable replacement for Update in the Forum Community programming lineup.

Simfan is correct, as usual regarding these matters, that the main draw of the armed forces is the rad dress uniforms.

Whatever service involving the least amount of risk of death, shouty men yelling at you, standing in 'drill' (wtf) and tasks involving physical strength.

I would not mind marching around, actually, but it's the manual of arms that would worry me, with my rather wanting level of hand-eye coordination.

Eww ... Either I'm too old or too young for this forum.

Fun fact: The first gay soldier who made money out of the repeal of DADT was an Airman:

I must wholeheartedly disagree here, Walter.  Imagine who your everyday citizen is.  An eternity of sweet nothing only to be thrust into this awful world and its awful conflicts through no choice of our own.  We can live and learn and find appreciation for things and the lucky and better ones of us find reason to show some gratitude towards something or someone.  And I can certainly agree that there is some semblance of responsibility to others in the social contract.  But the nature of war and conflict?  This is the dark black of a gray scale.  You are asking others to give up all their have and possibly their life because those in power are having a spat about things the common person couldn't possibly affect and might not care about.  On that philosophical and moral point; I find the idea of a draft and for people to be forced into military service to be unconscionable.
