Primarily, I think Trump wants everybody to talk about HIM. It's the attention he's seeking.

Becoming president is only a means to an end. If he doesn't become president, he could just as well do another reality TV show to fulfill his desire.

I entered this thread to post these exact words.

If he were to drop out (which won't happen), how are the GOP supposed to pick a new candidate?

I don't think he does. However, his ego being what it is, he certainly wants to win.

There are probably procedures to allow for an emergency meeting to choose another nominee.  However, in a lot of states I imagine the deadline to put a different candidate on the ballot will have passed.

This is most likely the true answer.

I think the last 10 days have definitely answered this question.

Of course he does. Desperately, in fact.

He's just a sh**t candidate. That's why he's failing.

I think he wants to be able to vote for himself. His campaign has proven he doesn't want to actually govern, namely the offer to make Kasich do the governing and Donald be like a king. But as he's already treated like a king in his own business without having the responsibilities of 300 million Americans, I think he doesn't want to actually *be* president.

He's in it for the chase. When that's over and he's captured the prize, then boredom will set in.

If he wins then he'll set "conditions" on being President. He'll demand that he still be able to live in his Mira Lago mansion and use his personal jet to and from the White House. Or better yet, he'll demand that all White House business be conducted in the mansion.

He'll have tons of "other" business to take care of with all of his business interests, so he's going to demand that he have a couple days off per week so he can continue running his own personal show.

Just some ideas on the "conditions" he is bound to set before accepting the job.
