Bit of an unsettling hypothetical this. Imagine yourself with your thinking patterns, were transported back to the 30' or perhaps earlier. If you are being honest with yourself, would you have any truck with the mass ideologies that we would know consider extreme - namely Bolshevism and Fascism?

Would the right-wingers of this forum, fearful of communism, have found solace in the Conservative strong state ideal of Fascist movements?

Would the left-wingers, frustrated by the uselessness of the democratic left against enemies, be swayed by the superficial charm of Soviet infused communism?

Exactly what country we were in would play a deep role, no doubt.

Given that this recession more or less led me to Bolshevism, I think the answer is yes.

Yes. I'd probably be turned into TNF-lite by the Great Depression.

Not really-I have too many sceptical and anti-utopian tendencies for me to embrace Communism, National Socialism, or Fascism over "middling" social democracy. OTOH, my generally uncombatative personality meant I may have acquisced to a totalitarian regime (in the sense of not actively opposing/rebelling against it or fleeing from it) fairly easily without the benefit of hindsight.

No. I'm afraid I would've been one of those old social democrats/democratic socialists who found myself in real danger in Germany or Italy.

I'd like to think that I'd be a George Orwell-esque socialist, but realistically without the benefit of the internet and modern diversity, I'd probably be on the far-right.

No, but I would take a huge shift to the left.

Which has failed over over again and resulted in the murder of 100 million people.

More dangerous than any ideology except Nazism which was the most evil ideology ever but Soivet Communism is #2

Without hindsight I probably would have been some type of Communist. I know that I flirted with Marxism even before the economic collapse so I could see myself being a bit of a bolshevick in the 30s.
