I obviously support the opposition shown by oakvale and others to this dreadful proposal that is the Affirmative Consent in Post-Secondary Education Act. I'm all for prudishness, but I'm skeptical of more or less telling people that ideally they'd have a signed (and maybe notarised) contract ready before engaging in sexual relations, and, failing that, secure vocal consent at "every step". Just think about it:

"Might I kiss you?"

"Yes, you may."

"Might I take off your trousers?"

"Yes, you may."

"May I insert my..."

And so forth. It makes you cringe but I'm not entirely sure how this is not what this bill would have people do. Again, if you want enforced prudery, I'm all for it but this is not it.

Obviously, there are different ways to address this problem and all I want is a productive conversation and eventual solution that can actually be effective.

     As I described in the relevant Senate thread, I think we need to be getting universities out of the bedroom. While college students may behave like children, I hardly think it appropriate for them to be treated as such by their institutions or to have such treatment enshrined in the law. Let's leave the definition and prosecution of rape and sexual assault to a real court of law.
