Yeah, I'm going there...despite the inevitable screams of "OMG sexism!" (OK, maybe this thread is a bit, but only to illustrate what she'll face). We all know that she will be judged by a different standard - by the media, by the voters, by everyone - for better and for worse. This will be one of the cases of "worse".

Evidence pretty flatly shows that she had plastic surgery sometime before 2008; in many pictures from 2000-2006 she looked as old or older than she does today, then magically appeared rejuvenated for the 2008 campaign.

There are some (highly speculative and not really trustworthy) sources saying that she actually has had more plastic surgery recently, but I can't really tell - fairly recent photos seem to show her a bit more fresh-looking than last year, but it could just be lighting/conditions, or rest.

But the reality is that she will be 69 years and 1 week old on Election Day 2016. The same criticism that Democrats levied at John McCain for being "too old" - at age 72 - in 2008 will be levied at us (regardless of the "men die earlier than women" narrative/fact). Women are judged based on physical impressions more so, and so both substantive age criticisms along with aesthetics are going to be part of the campaign. It may very well prove to be a larger than expected liability. On the other hand, I could see two potential reasons behind her not having substantial work done:

  • 1) She legitimately doesn't care about pandering to this type of logic anymore at her age, and refuses to embrace it
  • 2) She and/or the campaign think that by not doing it, there will be a subconscious boost in her authenticity

If you were Hillary's campaign manager, what would you recommend?

No. For in other reason than it would look waaaaay more obvious. Since she not planning on running from her gender this time, it would send a terrible message to women that she running, just as soon as she's been freshened up for public display.

And honestly, the same people who would freak about about her appearance would just be doing the same thing if it was obvious she got a facelift. The conservative radio talking heads are going to mock her either way.

It depends what you mean by plastic surgery.

People would be fine with Hillary Clinton getting more routine dermatological work done.  If it's lasering something or a bit of botox, that seems fine.   If it is overtly noticeable or requires general anesthesia or cutting and pasting, that would be very foolish.

There's unfortunately a double standard for female politicians.  They need to be attractive, but not too attractive, feminine but strong, well-put together but not vain.  It's pretty difficult to maintain that balance, but Hillary Clinton has done it pretty well.

And also, I generally meant that "operating under the pretense that she's known for years that she was going to run again - as well as her inner circle - should she have done this a couple to a few years ago?".

The one comparison for 2000 vs. 2008 is dumb because that was her official Senate picture, and was clearly airbrushed.

Dumb thread. That's like asking should Sarah Palin have plastic surgery.  It's not necessary.

The one comparison for 2000 vs. 2008 is dumb because that was her official Senate picture, and was clearly airbrushed.

Not only that, the 2000 picture is as unflattering as possible for anyone of any age -- bad lighting creating shadows that emphasize lines and wrinkles; she's speaking, so her facial muscles are creating lines that aren't otherwise there; and the camera is looking upward at her, which is considered the worst angle to photograph from.

There's no way to win at this if you're a woman. If you get plastic surgery to stave off the aging process, people laugh at you for trying to look younger than you are. If you let yourself age naturally, people just say, "Damn, she looks so old!"

If you think there isn't a double standard, ask why no one ever brings up John Kerry's facelift/dermal fillers. I mean seriously, the man might as well be wearing a wooden mask.

Hey, guys (and girls)? Just because we don't like something or wish it wasn't a perception/problem in the real world doesn't mean bringing it up is idiotic. Tens of millions of people will subconsciously judge Hillary based on how she looks and draw all sorts of conclusions from it, and that will affect in some capacity how they vote. Yes, she would also be judged if she did have noticeable plastic surgery performed, too; that only reinforces the narrative that I've brought to light here.

Even the Democratic Party is trying to make her look like the Hillary from years ago (but muh lighting) with their first post about the developments:

Actually, I think this should be the official campaign image.

Much more realistic.

Of course you are correct.

Because according to this board this Presidential election is now over, Hillary has won, there is no need to hold any vote, and Obama himself  should immediately sign an executive order proclaiming Hillary President for life and then immediately step aside himself.

I am completely ashamed of myself for even questioning Hillary's unquestionable entitlement to the Oval Office, and I throw myself upon the mercy of this board for whatever punishment they see fit to inflict upon me.  I am completely deserving of any disciplinary action this board deems suitable for a heretic such as myself.

For such a misguided soul as myself, I can only plead for leniency and promise that from this time forward, I too shall cast myself before the Alter of Hillary and proclaim complete loyalty and obeisance.

I have no idea if she had plastic surgery.

But it's not worth the risk.

It would be a bad news cycle if the story comes out. All that requires is an orderly selling a cell phone photo for six figures.
