Welcome to CNN's 2016 election night. We want to welcome our viewers in the United States and around the world. I'm Wolf Blitzer, joined by Anderson Cooper who will be with you for the rest of the night and into the morning. This election is looking somewhat close, between Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Virginia Tim Kaine. These candidates were not supposed to face off tonight, as Rubio defeated the powerful Jeb Bush and Tim Kaine defeated Elizabeth Warren in a tough Democratic primary battle, that was supposed to be Hillary Clinton's until she announced she's not running. The last CNN/ORC poll on November 7, showed Rubio slightly leading Kaine 49% to 48%. The election starts now.
It's 6:00pm, and we can project a winner in Indiana and Kentucky: Marco Rubio has won Indiana and Kentucky, no surprise except for Indiana, Sen. Kaine was campaigning in Indiana a few weeks ago, believing he can make inroads there.

INDIANA:
Rubio/Kasich-53%
Kaine/Bullock-47%

KENTUCKY:
Rubio/Kasich-63%
Kaine/Bullock-37%

It's 7:00pm EST, and five states have their polls close. We can project two states out of the five. We can project that South Carolina will go to Marco Rubio easily and Vermont will easily go to Tim Kaine. Not a surprise there, but surprisingly, Georgia is too close to call. Georgia, a fairly conservative state, another state that Kaine and the Democrats are trying to compete, Kaine being a southerner is one of the reasons. Florida, unsurprisingly is too close to call, the home of Rubio. Virginia is also too close to call, the home of Kaine.

SOUTH CAROLINA:
Rubio/Kasich-62%
Kaine/Bullock-37%

VERMONT:
Kaine/Bullock-62%
Rubio/Kasich-37%

GEORGIA- TOO CLOSE TO CALL

VIRGINIA-TOO CLOSE TO CALL

FLORIDA-TOO CLOSE TO CALL

How did Kaine go from being the first Senator to endorse Hillary to running against her?

It's 7:30pm, and the polls have closed in West Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina. We can project that Marco Rubio has won West Virginia, while North Carolina, Ohio, the home of vice presidential candidate John Kasich are too close to call. Virginia and Georgia remains too close to call, surprisingly Georgia, a state that the Kaine campaign has been targeting, but Georgia is very competitive tonight.

WEST VIRGINIA
Rubio/Kasich-55%
Kaine/Bullock-44%

It's 8:30pm, and we have some projections to make. Polls close in Arkansas, and Arkansas is too close to call, surprisingly. Georgia, we can project for Rubio, North Carolina, Ohio, New Hampshire, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania is too close to call. However, we can project that Kaine will win Maine, but will lose Maine's 2nd congressional district to Rubio.

Welcome back. I'm Wolf Blitzer, I'm getting sources from the Kaine campaign that is worrying Democrats about Ohio and Florida, our senior correspondent John King is live from the Kaine headquarters in Richmond, Va. John, what's the latest?

KING: Yes, I'm hearing that the turnout in Cleveland was mediocre for Kaine, but still high turnout among the youth vote for Kaine, and with Ohio Gov. John Kasich's favorite son appeal here, it's difficult on the Democrats here in Ohio. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a key finalist for the Kaine veepstakes said to me a few minutes ago that Kaine should have campaigned more around Zanesville, Akron, the lunchbucket areas to ramp up union turnout, but we'll see. Wolf.

It just seems a bit anticlimactic to begin a TL with a full election night but spoil the winner in the title.

We have a major projection: With Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio, Florida as well giving Rubio the presidency. Marco Antonio Rubio, a young man from Florida who people thought was too inexperienced to win, has won the presidency of the United States.

President-elect Marco Rubio said in his victory speech on Tuesday night: Tonight, we say to America: Nationalism and honor is back, we love this country and the dreams of Americans that are willing to work for it will be achieved. We will not bow down to terrorism and hate, we will destroy it with every fiber of our body.

Democratic presidential candidate Tim Kaine conceded the presidential election on Wednesday morning, saying: We lost this election. We did not win. But we won the battle of ideas and we won the idea of pragmatism and progressive leadership by coming together. The Democratic Party can do that.

President-elect Marco Rubio announced that his chief of staff will be Todd Harris. Vice President-elect John Kasich will resign as Ohio governor in early 2017.
