So... Hillary Clinton is running a "it's about you" personal campaign that barely mentions her name up 50 points in the polls, while Marco Rubio polling in the single digits is declaring himself the inevitable serious contender anointed at the throne of Lincoln and Reagan.

April fools indeed.

Rubio is so important that he has the whole country except for those 2 pesky almost foreign states as the dot for his 'I'.

They prefer to be called "the freak states".

Rubio forgot to mention that Lincoln would be considered a socialist in today's Republican party.

Most American politicians during the 19th century would be considered radical conservatives by today's standards.

I think going for Lincoln's legacy is a tad too high for Marco Rubio.

On social issues yes, on economic issues of course not.

So 2015 America is Western Ukraine, and 19th century America is Eastern Ukraine?

I would just like for us to acknowledge here that a large number of Republican voters today (I'll be generous and hesitate from saying an outright majority), especially in certain regions of the country, can't stand Lincoln.

Obama already did the whole Lincoln thing, and it made more sense considering he was from Illinois.

Are you kidding me?

Pre-Gilded Age, even the most ardent libertarians today would likely be considered solid economic progressives.  With the federal government at 2.5% of GDP, the goalposts were considerably different.

Southern Whites hated Lincoln when they were Democrats and many still do as Republicans.  Hardly a reflection on the party as much as it is on that region, which has experienced radical changes in its politics during the last several decades.

"Approval" of Lincoln would be just as high among Northern Republicans than it would be among Northern Democrats.  I know it's now a required piece of reading for progressive dogma that Lincoln would be a Democrat if he were alive, but the fact is that the issues are COMPLETELY different today, and the end of the day suggesting he'd be anything other than a moderate Republican from Illinois (exactly what he was) is pure conjecture, dare I say wishful thinking.

Looks like he's lost the Southern states in the primaries. Will Bobby Jindal take up the mantle of Jeff Davis and the spirit of '61?

People need to stop comparing themselves to Lincoln. Or Reagan, for that manner, since his reputation is going down.

Kind of funny that a bunch of you get your panties in a wad about a Republican politician invoking the name of the first Republican President, a man most people acknowledge is the best President we've ever had.  Regardless of your beliefs about what party Lincoln would be in today (a futile exercise/debate, to say the least), he WAS a Republican.  If Barack Obama can invoke Abe's name with his justification more or less being that he's from Illinois, then Rubio should be able to do so without ridicule on the simple basis that he's a Republican.

The fact is that Lincoln is revered by Republicans, Democrats and Independents, alike.  He was an iconic President that represents a lot of great things to a ton of different people.

In essence I basically agree, but this trend of politicians comparing themselves to past leaders is quite irritate to me whoever does it.

The day St Ronald get's the historical rejection he deserves is inevitable.
