Thank f**k the Bolsheviks did what they did and liquidated the morons advocating this pretty early on. Continuing the war would have been an outright disaster that could have undone the entirety of the Bolshevik Revolution and returned the Whites to power. You sure would have gained a lot with that happening, amirite?

Did get the Baltic states and Finland free from the Russians and the creation of an independent Ukraine was a good thing, that unfortunately didn't last.

It would have been better if the Germans had tried eliminating the Bolsheviks, but it was an obvious move on their behalf.

The fate of Poland was to be expected.

As a general rule getting into the German sphere of influence was an advantage if the alternative was Russian domination.

Well, for the Russians it was a fairly neutral treaty. They needed out of the war so badly that the sacrifices were well worth it. For the rest of the world, it was a breeze of a treaty.

Trotsky himself was strongly opposed to signing the treaty IIRC.

But when you look at Brest-Litvosk it really puts into perspective the German whining about Versailles. When the tables were turned they were more then happy to extract harsh concessions from their defeated foes.

Objectively, Germany should have crushed the Bolsheviks and put a capitalist liberal state in place led by a monarch. Communists would have been jailed and the leaders of the rebellion would have lynched or shot.  (sane)

Not really. From Germany's perspective why should they continue the Eastern front when it's over for them and they have the West to focus on?

What a silly idea.

Freedom treaty that didn't go far enough for obvious reasons. It liberated the captive peoples of Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, the Baltics and Finland.

In a perfect world, Germany would have marched to St. Petersburg and Moscow and either restored the Romanovs or founded a stable democratic and capitalist republic.

Outside the financial rewards to Germany and the transfer of territory to the Turks I fail to see any problems with it. Yes Russia lost a lot of territory, but it wasn't territory populated by Russians but by subjected people.

If anything, Brest-Litovsk was too ambitious as it tied down Central Powers troops in occupations that could have been more profitably used on the Western front.
