I think it ended up being a great ending in context.

Series Finale (Sn 22, Ep 13) "April Fools"

April 1, 2015: Bushie has finally made it. He has a job at Sprouts that the forum respects and will help him lose weight. His parents support him. Allison is talking to him again. On April Fools of all days, life is normal for Jeff Brown. But, like Walter White at the end of Breaking Bad's penultimate Granite State, that conclusion simply wasn't satisfying.

April 2, 2015: He walks out of the job. Gives them the "two weeks." Signs up for another call center scam job. Tells his parents to support him mooching. And finally, for once in his life, he makes a big change. He makes a change that he finally sticks to: he leaves the forum and ends Update.

Definitely A. I look forward to reviewing it in a few months and I suspect that's what I will give it.

I don't think it's over.

Like Walter White, Bushie will return to the scene of the crime to say his final goodbyes.  He'll talk to us.  About how he liked ******* everything up, and he was never trying to help his family, and everything was always about him because he enjoyed his super duper cable package and sitting around unemployed all the time.  The authorities chased Walter, like the mods will chase Bushie.  In the end, he'll make his last stand and go down in a blaze of glory... but not before the ultimate good deed is done for a person who he never saw eye-to-eye with and was the total opposite of; when he storms the Mod gates and frees opebo.

And we are left to wonder.  Was Bushie the good guy or the bad guy?

It is not the ending that Update fans may have wanted, but it is definitely the ending that Update fans deserved. B.

It really is perfect that he finally got an actual job after all these years. And then pissed it away. The metaphoric implications are staggering. Sartre had nothing on Update. Nothing.

Also the TV Tropes page can be finalized now.

What a Downer Ending. Also made the thing a Shaggy Dog Story.

Round and around we go.

Was Bushie real?  As real as Ronald Reagan!  Either Bushie is a mastermind (unlikely) or there's a mastermind behind him.

For the scoffing I DONT GET IT crowd:  Ronald Reagan was an actor.

It is, but it fits the downward spiral of the narrative very well. Update worked on so many levels, and it stands as one of the great literary works of our time. A+

The AV Club has only ever given one episode an A+.

Nah, it's some very small number, but it's more than one. Two different Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes got A+'s, off the top of my head.

But I agree that the AV Club wouldn't give an A+ to the Update finale.

The only A+ episode I know of off the top of my head was Jose Chung's From Outer Space in their X-Files recap feature, which was also (correctly) deemed one of the ten best TV episodes of all time. But I know there have been others. Didn't one Breaking Bad episode also get an A+?

A Seinfeld episode went A+ IIRC.

Don't think BB got the magic A+.

A cartoon miniseries called Over The Garden Wall briefly had an A+ review before it was changed to an A.
