I only ask because I've heard some people suggest that she might not run for reelection. As far as I know that's never been suggested.

Since Jimmy Carter, Herbert Hoover and even hapless William Howard Taft ran for reelection, I'm sure she will regardless of potential unpopularity.

I've read that McCain came close to taking a one term pledge in 08. Granted it would have taken a freak occurrence for him to win that election.

I don't see why she wouldn't. She'll be 73 on Election Day 2020, but I don't see that being prohibitive to serving another term.

Hillary would do anything to obtain power and to keep power as long as possible.

So of course she will run, even though being 73 years old and probably senile.

Says a member of the party that nominated John McCain, when he would've been 72 at the start of his first term.

Why would she not? I guess she's pretty old but I would guess that she would want to serve as long as she can if elected.

Okay, so they both would've been/would be senile...

And re-elected a 74 year old  fart with Alzheimer's, and nominated a clearly slowing 73 year old in '96.

....Yeah, you have no room to talk at all.

The 2018 mid term disaster the Dems will face and the 2017-18 recession will tear the Dems apart.

With a deep recession and a GOP congress, how Hillary handles the recession will tear the Dems apart. The left will want a $2 trillion stimulus plan that focuses on WPA and CCC type programs (and they accuse the right of living in the past). A GOP congress will pass tax cuts and Hillary will be in a bind. Sign or Veto with rising unemployment?

Hillary also wont have the high approval ratings floor that Obama had. Obama is the first president since JFK not to fall into the 30s for any sustained period of time. Hillary wont be so lucky.

At age 73 with a bad economy, higher unemployment than in Nov 2016, massive deficits and the Clinton reputation from the 1990s in tatters, Hillary will not run. If she does, she faces a primary challenger. The GOP field will be even stronger in 2020 than in 2016.

She is effectively 5 years younger though, because of the male/female life expectancy gap.

Senility would be unlikely for her. She does not have a family medical history of alzheimers, plus women likelier have more of the symptoms over 75 years, as their life expectancy is longer. I do not know her medical history for fact, but I don't think she will have alzheimers while in office if she has had 2 terms.

She would only step down when her health declines seriously.

Every one-term president ran for reelection since Chester Arthur or so. I don't count TR, Coolidge, Truman and LBJ because they served more than one term.

Second terms haven't been kind to Presidents recently, and if Hillary is approaching 2020 on a high note is it possible that she decides to retire as a way to preserve what would be an overwhelmingly positive legacy?

In fact, that seems more likely - if Hillary retires in 2020 its probably because she's doing great, not because she's doing terrible.

Probably.

It's very unusual for Presidents not to run for another term. And she hasn't rejected opportunities to serve in office.
