That is an outrageous misinterpretation of that answer.

I think obviously what people meant was that we should support Israel's right to exist and defend itself militarily, as we would for any country.  It's not that we think Israel's interests come first, it's that we stand on some sort of principle in our foreign policy.

Imagine if we were talking about the UK.  Would we help defend the UK, even if it was inconvenient or expensive?  Sure.  We compete with the UK as a fellow power in global finance.  Suppose we uncovered a plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange.  Would we keep that information secret if we thought it would bolster New York's position as a center of finance?  Of course not.

There is always a balance between your national self-interest and maintaining baseline principles in the international realm.

Are these two answers even mutually exclusive?

What does it mean to for the US to "support" a country?  The US is a country, not a sports bra.  If support means defend their basic right to exist, that's not mutually exclusive.  If support means, do what Bibi says, that's ridiculous and nobody would say we ought to do that.

I would agree with both statements personally.  We should support Israel and we should pursue America's interests when we disagree with them.  It's not an either/or situation.
