An explanation for (normal) people:

"Completely" means you don't have to look to accurately located nearly everything: All text (including numbers and symbols), navigation keys (Tab, Home, End, Page Up, etc), and function keys (F1-F12).

"Mostly" means you don't have to look to accurately locate all letters and numbers, but you have trouble with navigation keys, function keys, or some symbols. You still use most of your fingers and don't need to dart your eyes back from the screen to your keyboard.

"Sometimes" means you don't have to look to accurately locate most letters and numbers, but have to dart your eyes juuuuust to make sure. Sometimes you resort to index fingers. You have to double check with your eyes often.

"Hardly" means you are proficient at looking at the keyboard and puh-cheowing your index fingers onto where you find the button you desire. Numbers, symbols, and everything else requires extra focus.

"ALAS" means you are could reply to this thread, given enough time, but you prefer to just use the mouse and avoid that other monstrosity, thank you very much.

REMEMBER: The better you are, the worse you are. I voted "Mostly" because I still struggle to find F8 when I need it, which is almost never, and I kinda suck at using the number pad because I'm not an accountant.

EDIT: Given the criteria, I should have voted "Completely," but I didn't check the change your vote option because Friday night and vodka and loneliness.

Mostly. I don't understand how some people have reflexive memory of every single letter/symbol.

angus, you are the best Smiley

Mostly. I don't understand how some people have reflexive memory of every single letter/symbol.

I only do because many uncommon symbols are used when programming.

This.  Plus, we have laptops in our school, so we type constantly for all sorts of assignments.  That plus computer programming makes you a pretty darn good touch typer.

computer programming makes you a pretty darn good touch typer.

I experienced quite the opposite effect.  I was a relatively good typist, having taken typing for a year in the tenth grade, but in grad school when I started writing lots of computer programs, either to control instrumentation or to analyze data, I found myself looking more at the keyboard and using non-standard fingering techniques.

I voted for the first option, and I reckon myself a decent typist.  I'm not sure how many words I can type.  I do know I don't do it correctly on tablets and other touch screens.

Interesting.  I always see myself looking at the screen when writing programs, to make sure I didn't make a stupid Java error (no semicolon, missing brace, etc.).......we also have to write a lot of comments on our code, so that's a lot of typing practice also, but I can see how it could make one look at their keyboard more.

Only for a time, though, as the more you program the more using those keys becomes tied to muscle memory.

I'm excellent with letters and some symbols but I usually/always have to look down for numbers.
