Did stereotypical bitchy hot girl cheerleaders ever really exist? I went to an all-boys high school so I wouldn't know but whenever I saw cheerleaders at athletic events many of them were not even that attractive and I also remember a few girls who I knew and later found out were cheerleaders but never would've guessed beforehand.

So, is the stereotypical cheerleader a myth, a thing of the past, or just something I missed out on?

I went to a charter school that had no sports teams let alone cheerleaders, so FF I guess.

Voting FF in pre-emptive protest to the jealousy that will surely infiltrate this thread.

We don't have them in secondary schools sadly, but one of my roommates last year was a cheerleader and she is nice enough, so FF.

Yeah I would file this one under "your mileage may vary."

Even though they do not exist in Austrian high schools, FF.

I like to watch hot, sporty, flexible chicks do figures.

The concept of cheerleading is obviously ridiculously sexist, but that's not a reason to vote HP.

Nevertheless, America's first cheerleader president is reported to have had a Y chromosome:

OK, fair enough, but they're a tiny minority.

Or are there male cheerleaders in girls' sports games and female ones in guys' sports? If so, that would make a bit more sense (though still carries its share of unfortunate implications).

no male cheerleaders are quite in demand, as they typically have the strength for lifts etc.

Also cheerleading does not have to be for a sports game. The only time I've seen a display was as a stand alone performance. (I was invited to an American Football match, but I'm afraid I find the game baffling and even more tedious than our football, so I declined)

If it's not for a sports game, shouldn't it be called acrobatic gymnastics or something like that? I thought the point of cheerleading was to "encourage" a given sports team.

Oh, are you talking about the games in London? If you are, you definitely should go some time even if you hate football. Just the atmosphere of it is amazing.

Oh this was a silly uni thing in Sheffield. I am a big fan of the pomp and ceremony of Football though, I wouldn't miss up on all that fun.

They barely exist here, so dunno.

Is cheerleading a largely American thing or is it popular elsewhere as well?

One of my friends' girlfriend is a cheerleading coach, so FF, I guess, though not a huge fan.

Actually yes they did at my high school and they still have some pretty girls who are bitchy that cheered.

When I played football we had one of the sexier squads. They couldn't cheer worth a crap but they were great eye candy. Majority of them either had connections that got them on or were lucky to have made it. We had 2 to 4 who were talented the rest where there to get attention.

Now they have a legit coach and they have to work their tails off to make it, I like that and that's how it should be.

It's a very American thing. I wouldn't say that I mind it especially, but the girls I've known who did it weren't my favourite people and there is a creepy vibe to it. Like, I prefer my porn to be honest and above 18?

I can't vote one way or the other on this one.  I always enjoyed rooting AGAINST my high school but at the same time I, therefore, wanted the other school to have cheerleaders so they would win.  It's whatever.  This isn't important.  Slight lean towards FF for it's effect on forced sexual repression.
