Literally anything is better than 1980s Miami.

I would a hundred times rather live in New York then Miami today, but 1970s New York was something of a hell hole.

Probably Miami in the 80s.  Less crime and better job opportunity.

Both were gross. I'd actually vote for 1970's NYC judging by the tales I've heard from my dad about South Florida in the '80s.

I don't have a whole lot of patience for the opebo-esque charlatans who are so enamored of the "authenticity" and "grittiness" of the falling-apart, high-crime New York of the 1970s.  It was a bad time, and especially as someone who cares about the health of our cities, I think that attitude needs to die in a nuclear meltdown.

But, my god, I am not voting for 1980's Miami. I mean, I am not about to vote for 1980s anything anytime soon, but the Miami bit isn't helping either.

It's not that I consider that a positive but that I just don't care. After all I currently live in a pretty high crime area with lots of blighted buildings, and I think it's wonderful. I'm not going to move somewhere that's boring as f[inks] just because it means I'll hear police sirens less and not have to see some boarded up buildings. Now add in the fact that the other option is in Florida and it becomes even more clear...

oh and there's also the fact that even if blight and crime are the main factors for you, then Miami, either in the 80s or today, isn't going to be too high on your ideal places list either.

Florida is overrated.  So is New York.  I've never been to New York besides the airport, and I've only been to northern Florida.  I guess New York to escape the oppressive heat.

Very true. IMO, this is mostly what is responsible for the idealization of 70s NYC that traininthedistance complains about.

That is certainly true.  I did vote NYC after all.

I'd rather smell BRTD than live in Tony Montana's Miami.
