Despite the worries of many citizens, the Panic of 1908 proved to be a short-lived ordeal, and President Eugene Debs would enjoy moderate prosperity over the four years that followed. Building off of Teddy Roosevelt's actions to dismantle the Trusts, Debs proceeded to expand the war on big business by targeting any and all monopolistic corporations. In addition, Debs and the Populist-controlled Congress passed the nation's first minimum wage law and adopted a Constitutional Amendment establishing an income tax. Though Deb's party would suffer setbacks in the 1910 Midterms as a result of these achievements, a coalition with progressive-minded Americans and Democrats ensured that the president maintained effective control of the legislature heading into the 1912 election cycle.

Highly popular within his own party, Debs faces opposition only from former Secretary of State Thomas E. Watson in his bid for reelection. Watson represents a distinct minority within the People's Party that feels Debs has abandoned the nation's farmers by focussing too much on labor issues, and while not strong enough to deny the president renomination, they could certainly damage his credibility. The Democrats likewise have an uncrowded field, with conservative Congressman Champ Clark, the party's nominee for president in 1908, facing progressive Governor Woodrow Wilson of Virginia.

The American National Convention, however, is a crowded free-for-all, with multiple candidates representing various factions and constituencies all vying for the nomination. These include Senator Robert "Fighting Bob" La Follette, leader of the party's progressive wing; Congressman Charles W. Fairbanks, a conservative from the crucial swing state of Indiana; former President Theodore Roosevelt, who is running as the "true progressive" candidate opposed to the "hayseed cronyism" of the Populists; former Vice President Henry Cabot Lodge, champion of the conservative Americans; and former Congressman Eugene Chafin, who represents the Prohibitionist faction. While the battle between former allies Lodge and Roosevelt has been particularly brutal, La Follette is considered to be the front runner, due both to his prominence and to the perceived need to nominate a progressive to offset Deb's advantage amongst reform advocates.

Choose wisely.

Although I'm liking a lot of the American ticket [namely LaFollette and Roosevelt] and may be inclined to vote for them again.

Really, this is another "flip-a-coin" ones.

But I'll go with the other Populist guy just so Debs is forced to not to forget the farmers.

La Follette/Fairbanks, but I'd say TR/Lodge is passable. I suppose it's highly unlikely for Bob to choose someone like Fairbanks, but it may mean getting elected. I doubt he'd go with any of the other options though and even if it were someone not listed, I just like Fairbanks.
