Rep. David Brat (R-VA) on Thursday, during a conversation with Lars Larson at the “Hold Their Feet To The Fire” conference, blamed Obamacare for moving America away from a free market system and making the country more like North Korea.

During the conversation, Brat responded to a PolitiFact article, which took issue with a statement he'd made on March 17. Brat had said repealing Obamacare would save America more than $2 trillion, a statement that PolitiFact, a fact-checking project run by the Tampa Bay Times, disputed and said was false.

Brat disagreed with PolitiFact's conclusions and told Larson that moving away from a free market economy was endangering America.

“Look at every country in the world,” Brat said. “Look at North Korea and South Korea. It’s the same culture, it’s the same people, look at a map at night, half the, one of the countries is not lit, there’s no lights, and the bottom free-market country, all Koreans, is lit up. See you make your bet on which country you want to be, right? You want to go free market.”

“We have poverty on the rise because we’re moving away from free markets,” Brat added.

Kind of a misleading headline. Brat pointed to North Korea as an extreme on an axis.

This guy is a loon but in general the GOP is slowly abandoning the whole "repeal Obamacare" thing. The LA Times has a good article on this today:

Interesting quote from article:

And "capitalist" South Korea has a universal health insurance program far more comprehensive than what the ACA does.

David Brat is a moron. It's troubling to think this man was awarded a PhD and a university faculty position.

At least he beat Cantor. Brat will never have a leadership position, and Cantor was a jerk, so Brat's comments, while stupid, won't affect anything.

Im so glad you acknowledge PhDs are only rewarded to the financially viable on whose head the square hat fits.  The graduation ceremony is capped offby an illustration that the circle (your head) has been squared.

That's why all schools are so nervous about the kids throwing the hat off afterwards (they outlaw it or threaten fines for not finding your square again).  My school said throw the hat off but you must turn in a hat.  So be sure to scramble for one against your fellow graduates lest you be fined!

Grad school:  Finishing school for squares.

Really?  We got to keep our hat.  Had to return the robe, but the hat (ahem, mortarboard Tongue) was ours.

If the snowball makes it through hell and a GOP President is elected, it's more likely they will "repeal and replace Obamacare" AKA do nothing and rename Obamacare to take credit.

It's a joke how similar say, the Rubio and Ryan Plans, detailed in Op-Eds to the WSJ are to Obamacare. They're simply renaming the tax subsidy into a "tax credit", and Medicaid expansion "Medicaid payment restructuring" and the exchanges "federally-support state-run risk pool markets."

That's why you live in NY and I live in bumfinks nowhere.  Your family paid for the hat.  We could merely rent.  The less worthy don't even get to graduate.

True story:  my mom was adopted and raised in the Cleaver household...a good Christian home.  In a bad fight in which she told her dad she wanted her real parents instead, my grandpa pointed out had her mom been pregnant then, she would've been an abortion.

My mom was very pro life despite being pro choice in the end.  (As in CHOOSE no)...and wrote a report on her opposition to Roe v Wade in a required fluff home ec style class in 12th grade.  The teacher failed her from the class for it.  The teacher was a strong abortion advocate.

This meant she couldn't graduate.  So the principal said "you can walk the graduation line if you promise to make up the class in summer school"

She made history by telling the principal to f**k off and walked out of the office.  She skipped the ceremony and graduated anyway.  She never wore the square.

I miss my mom a lot.

When our radios are fixed to receive only one signal, that signal heavily laden with messages praising our Great and Glorious Leader, when whole families go to labor camps for one member making a joke about the Great and Glorious Leader or grumbling about any aspect of life... then tell me about how America has become like North Korea.

He's obviously being disingenuous to rile up the rubes. Amazing how many people take everything a person says at face value.
