Have other countries in the past recovered from situations like those currently facing Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Egypt?

With an attempt to establish a liberal democracy and rule of law, only for the backlash to result in either chaos, a power vacuum where extremists rise to power, or heavy corruption, or a new dictator?

If so, which countries, and how did they recover?

Indeed...the answer is 'every liberal democracy'.

I wouldn't say every liberal democracy.. Many of them sort of gradually became democratic piece by piece, like the UK.

Some things tend to hold back democracies - resource based economies are normally a major drawback to democratic development; large and autonomous militaries not under civilian control, the meddling of foreign powers, ethnic and religious bickering and upswings In conservative or nationalistic thought all can throw things off balance. But none of these are absolute blocks on democratic development.
