"Capitalism in this country is going to fail if there’s not a significant, substantial number of people who believe that capitalism works for them and people are beginning to doubt around the world and in this country whether capitalism works for them."

Capitalism will never fail in the US but it may well become the epitome of oligarchy.

there is no such thing as "never".

since there have been laws, there have been criminals.
there have been thieves since there’s been property
and the day will come again when none of those things are around,
I just hope it’s before people go extinct

LOL, I knew exactly what this was going to say word-for-word before clicking on it.

Does this mean he too is considering a run? I sure hope so.

Anyway, wrt: capitalism, I believe the standard denouement of democracy from antiquity was for it to become corrupted by proto-capitalistic oligarchy, until the people lost faith in it and turned to a strongman. As unthinkable as such a thing should be in the U.S., the steady financialization of our political system since the 1970s certainly fits into the narrative...

Serious people will stay at their slot machine even as their husband dies next to them.  Losing an average of five cents on every dollar of debt they pump in.

If I posted a humanly metaphor of what's happening here, I'd be banned.

I'm all for the pessimistic world-weary vignettes, but that one didn't make all that much sense.

If the Gilded Age didn't usher in this "end of capitalism", how would our current age ever hope to do so? Howard Dean has been infected with sage.

depends on the organization that's there to "catch it".  if the CIO had happened in the 20s instead of the 30s, what we know as American capitalism may have folded into very much a mixed economic system with organized labor at the forefront.  depending on whether FDR was elected in '32, depending on the possibility of a coup attempt had FDR conditionally backed labor over industry... counterfactuals get tricky.

no fear, though: no such organization now exists.  the finance capitalists emerged from 2008 even stronger than before.  there are some movements in Europe that could spell trouble: Syriza, Podemos, 5 Star Movement, etc.  but they're a long way from posing a serious threat.  organization has to occur in Germany itself, and with the German economy rolling along (the youth unEmp Rate in DE is around 7%, compared to 20-40% in Italy and Spain and Greece), there may not be much of a prospect for that.

forget about Britain, useless reactionaries just like us Americans.

Well my dad worked in a casino and watched a woman stay at her machine while her husband died of a heart attack.  Those will be the die hard capitalists.  Pumping their worthless money right into the machine.

This song and dance is so tired. Democrats who vote to cripple capitalism talk about saving it, whenever election season rolls around. Malice and contempt for the American people.

Capitalism isn't going to fall. Most Americans would much rather live in an imperfect system than trade it in for a Kafkaesque hellhole.

Right, cause government bailouts, government consumer mandates, government price controls and government subsidies to business are totally capitalism and stuff.

yeah, inverted-totalitarian corporate state-capitalism has borne Kafka out "to a 't'"

I thought this was about using the four-letter c-word which is now flattering for women.
