The only way to rebuild the middle class without increasing the size of the college educated population would be to rebuild America's industrial base, though if Walker's resume is any indication, he would be ill-suited to that task.

Why would they back him over Rand?

Union busting background, and the fact they already have ties with him.

Why would they back him over Rand?
Because Rand Paul isn't going to be the nominee.

Also, Rand Paul has shown a pacifistic streak by GOP standards.

It's profoundly disturbing that a couple of very wealthy men have this much influence in the American political system.

Then again, this is hardly historically novel in this country...

Even if they agree more with Rand, they probably think backing Walker will get them more results.

Actually, I don't think that was really at play for the Koch duo. Their main priority seems to be corporate power.

no, all this has the potential to do is make the financial playing field competitive (and thus a harder path than Bush 2000, or Romney 2012, to the nomination -- the latter was so distrusted he may well have lost lost if ANY remotely financially viable candidate had stepped up).

Bush has East Coast finance locked up.

Exactly. Jeb was in trouble even with his enormous fundraising advantage. In a competitive financial playing field? He's in DEEP trouble.

Walker has yet to demonstrate that he's viable at the national level. His "feet in the water" efforts so far have gone poorly. And there's always that looming investigation...

Their corporation produces a good amount of military products. Cutting defense is not an option.
Ramp up the deficits!

I guess it wasn't enough for the Kochs to buy the governor's mansion in Wisconsin and a senate seat in Iowa. They need to buy the white house, too. Well, at least no one will be able to argue that Walker is "the people's Scotty".

They won't be putting money behind him in the primaries is the point.

It sounds like they are trying to be more responsible with their money and not blow it on flavor of the months like Adelson did.

If Walker makes it to Iowa still in the lead among conservative candidates and the only opposition to establishment Bush, expect the Kochs to start dropping money for him then.

Here's a long POLITICO piece on the network's plans.
