I only know my mother's parents (and I only met my mother's father). Both were born in the United States, but my grandfather's parents were both from England.

I don't even know my paternal grandparents' names.

All 4 were born in the Soviet Union. Going by modern boundaries gives 3 Ukraine, 1 Russia.

On one side, my grandmother is Irish and my grandfather Russian.  On the other side, both of my grandparents are American.

They're all from the Chinese heartland, so I'd imagine my family has roots going back thousands of years there.

All of mine were born in the U.S.

Two were born in Michigan (incidentally, both of my grandmothers. One part of my family hails from Detroit and lived up there for awhile, and the other grandmother was born there because her father went to work in the auto plants after the war ended), and two in Kentucky

I answered option 1. I thought all 4 were born in America, 2 to immigrants. Then I remembered my mom told me my grandfather had to learn English and was picked on in school for not knowing it. So I'm guessing he was an immigrant too. I'm sure my mom knows, but as I'm sitting here, I'm not sure.

All four were born in New Jersey.  However, two of them (both of my mom's parents) spent their childhood in Poland.

I don't remember where exactly in NJ my dad's parents were, though he knows.  My mom's parents were either Passaic (if they were born in a hospital) or Wallington (if they were born at home).

Three of my grandparents were born in the UK although all four were born in Ireland. My maternal grandparents were born in Ireland when it was still part of the UK and my paternal grandmother (who is the only one still living) in the UK but on the island of Ireland (but after independence). My paternal grandfather was the only one born in the Republic of Ireland.

This thread would be more interesting if it were about great grandparents. All of mine were born in the UK o/c, but afaik seven of them were born on the island of Ireland (the other was from Yorkshire).

It depends on what you mean by "country". All my grandparents were born in India, of course. I don't know for sure, but I think two were born in the Sylhet area and one near Feni. Today both are part of Bangladesh, but at the time of their births Sylhet was part of Assam province while Feni was part of Bengal province. As for my father's father, my understanding (which could well be completely mistaken) is that he was born around Karimganj, which despite being a Bengali community was at that time and is still today part of Assam. Nowadays Karimganj is on the Indian side of the border, but obviously I have no way of being completely sure which side of the contemporary border my grandfather was born on.

The two in India were actually born in present-day Pakistan, but fled to Indian Punjab after the partition of 1947.

Yes, but I have no clue what country my great-great-grandparents were born in, which is about the era of Hillary's grandparents and when most Americans' ancestors immigrated to the United States.

Depends on what you mean by 'country'. All four were born in the United Kingdom, but the UK is a country made up of countries. Both maternal grandparents were born in England (Willington in Co. Durham and Daventry in Northamptonshire), so that's simple enough. Both paternal grandparents were born in Wales (Llan Ffestiniog in Merionethshire and Abertillery in Monmouthshire), which is where things get a little complicated. Firstly because Wales was basically a geographical notion until the 1960s and was administered in exactly the same way as England except for a few minor issues (such as the sale of alcohol). Secondly, because the position of Monmouthshire was contested; although historically part of Wales it had been counted as English for some judicial and parliamentary purposes - we are literally just talking administrative technicalities here: see the earlier comment about Wales as a largely geographical notion - from the 16th century onwards. Except that (oh dear) it was grouped with Wales for most of the few matters where the law was different in Wales to England; the clunky term used was 'Wales and Monmouthshire'. Though as far as Nan was concerned she was born in Wales, so that's that.
