Hogan and Rauner can only dream. Warren and Baker will be reelected in 2018.

70-6 approval? Great news for him. I hope he doesn't do anything stupid. BTW, how's Hogan doing?

Not very surprising, considering he's been very open to his opposition. GOPers in blue states need to emphasize competence over ideology more in the way Baker did.

Only 8% disapproval is impressive no matter who it is. Congrats to him and Massachusetts!

I haven't followed Massachusetts politics, so could someone kindly give me a quick summary of what he's done so far? Bills, executive orders, appointments, etc. that led to this?

Boston globe has an article on the subject. Not as specific as I'd like but it sounds like things are going fine.

Yes, this is what happens when Democrats in a state forget that to act like an opposition party. Roll Eyes

Massachusetts Democrats are as useless as they are sexist.

Reminds me of another northeastern "moderate" Republican governor who was wildly popular before people started to see through his false persona.

Governor Baker is all smoke and mirrors. I wish him the best in maintaining his facade.

Christie was always a loud blowhard though, even during his moderate adoration days. Baker has seemed to keep his mouth close and his nose to the grindstone. Baker reminds me a bit more of this man -

On that note, I predict that no Massachusetts Democrat will win the presidency at any point during the next 30 years. And it won't happen with any of them from my home state Michigan. So, look to other Blue Firewall states for party-presidential winners. (More likely, other double-digit, electoral-vote Blue Firewall states.)

Massachusetts loves their moderate-esque Republican governors, what else is new?

Didn't he do something that angered the Tea Party, like support the police protests?

As long as he doesn't prepare to run for president like christie did, or start to become partisan, like christie did. And plays it safe with democrats by not doing anything wrong. His popularity might stick to a 70% win like Governor Weld did in 1994.

I wonder if he'll outdo Weld's landslide 1994 reelection.

Assuming the great female savior wins, 2018 could produce the right conditions for that

Baker is doing most things right to remain a popular moderate governor, but it's unlikely that numbers this good will hold up once the actually difficult decisions and fights--which are inevitable, even for somebody like Baker with a generally conciliatory personality--start happening. Even if the approvals don't go down much, the disapprovals will inevitably rise. Off the top of my head, entirely aside from the objections that the unions have to his transportation proposals, people involved in mental health and addiction care are starting to turn against him because of the effect that proposed budget cuts would have on the state's Recovery Learning Community system.

Looks like Massachusetts has settled on their token Republican vote. It isn't as derogatory as it seems. Baker has presented himself as an independent to survive in a very blue state, and blue staters always need one Republican that they can say "well this one is different" about so that they don't feel too partisan. Mark Kirk is the token Republican in Illinois, which is why he'll compete in 2016.

Well if the Dems need a sacrificial lamb for 2018 I'm sure they could give Martha Coakley a call.

Some of you may have heard that Boston's transit and commuter rail system fell apart during our record snowfalls.

Baker handled it as well as any governor could have. He acknowledged the problem early and often; he didn't make unreasonable claims about fixing it; he took control of the MBTA (fairly or not to Beverly Scott, the GM he booted); he declared himself open to different solutions; he announced a commission to study the problem and make recommendations; the commission actually came back with a report in reasonable time; he is now pursuing legislation to fix the MBTA.

Social issues are deader than a doornail. His LG, Karyn Polito, was a major anti-same-sex-marriage campaigner in the legislature who has ditched her positions and now officiates at gay weddings.

When Baker denies interest in federal politics or running for higher office as a Republican, he comes across as authentic. His personal style is modest but smart.

In a nutshell, he's the governor we thought we were getting when we elected Mitt Romney, but never did.
