Let's say a governor hits 70% in any sort of opinion poll. Should all opposition in the next election be forbidden? Even if the poll was a mere 3 months in?

Absolutely not. Automatic reelection is undemocratic.

I seem to remember one George W. Bush having over 90% approval in the wake of 9/11. Would Mr. Wulfric want us to continue electing that luminary into eternity because polls showed him to be popular earlier in his presidency

Judges in IL are elected. After 10 years they stand for retention. If they get 60% approval in the retention vote they are retained for another 10 years without opposition. If they fail to get 60% approval in the retention vote the seat is open for election in the next two-year cycle.

Yes but that's still an actual voting election, not a poll.

Is the judge retention system in Ilinois based off of the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan in a way?

This is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard. I hope you're joking (which you probably are).

Why forbid democracy under any circumstances?

That is what happens in dictatorships and other countries led by demagogues.

but to be on topic, no...no politician is ever above democracy. even if 99% of the state likes you, you must go to an election to determine this.
