1789-1808: Federalist
1808-1828: Republican
1828-1848: Democratic *
1848-1860: Independent abolitionist**
1860-1880: GOP
1880-1896: Independent swing voter***
1896-: Democratic

*No because I'm fond of Jackson or Polk, but because I really don't like Henry Clay or how elitist the Whigs were

** I would probably be in denial at first about the Democrats and skeptical. And Fremont would fuel that fire, though I cautiously vote for him. But Lincoln would do it.

*** After the Compromise of 1877, the GOP showed themselves to be distrustful corporatists...no way no how would I go with Hayes, not that the Democratic party as a whole were any better. Cleveland would get my vote in '84, but not '88 which would go to Harrison, and both would lose to Weaver in '92

Why not 1932 for Democrats

I don't believe I would have fully trusted FDR at first, but would switch to the Democrats once he proved himself.

Federalist Party (1789-1799) [1]
Democratic-Republican Party (1799-1828)
Whig Party (1828-1854) [2]
Republican Party (1854-1884) [3]
Democratic Party (1884-present) [4]

[1] In the wake of Shay's Rebellion, the sky-high national debt, and the general ineffectiveness of the Confederation Congress, I would have found arguments that a stronger national government was necessary convincing. The Republican's admiration of the French Revolution would have kept me in the Federalist camp, despite my dislike of Hamilton, until the Alien and Sedition Acts forced me to reconsider my political affiliation.

[2] Mostly because the Whigs were a catch-all for Anti-Jackson men. I'm not fond of the elitism of some of the party's leaders, but Andrew Jackson is simply unbearable, and not just because of his racism. I probably would have voted for Van Buren in 1848 (the first anti-slavery candidate with a legitimate chance of winning), but would have reverted to Scott in 1852 to stop Pierce.

[3] The go-to party for anti-slavery, pro-Union individuals. I would have stuck around despite the corruption of the Conkling-ites (except for a vote for Tilden in 1876) until 1884, when the nomination of Blaine drives me into the opposition.

[4] Apart from a few defections (for TR in 1912, La Follette in 1924, and possibly Weaver in 1892), I would have stuck with the Democrats up to the present.

1789-1808: Federalist Party
1808-1824: Democratic-Republican Party
1824-1833: National Republican Party
1833-1848: Whig Party*
1848-1854: Free Soil Party
1854-1912: Republican Party
1912: Bull Moose Party
1912-1924: Independent Swing Voter, Lean Republican, mostly out of distaste for Wilson early on
1924: Progressive Party
1924-1932: Swing Voter, Lean Republican
1932-Present: Democratic Party

*Although I rank Polk as one of the best presidents, I am not sure I would have voted for hum in 1844.

This color coding is terrible by the way. Tongue

1787 - 1824: Federalist
1824-1834: National Republican
1834-1854: Whigs
1854- : Republican

Since the question was about registration, not id or voting patterns.

I would have voted for Madison, Monroe and for FDR once or twice without hindsight.
