Based on what I personally believed at the time... No. But it wasn't based on hyperbolic cheap-seats views about oil etc, but about the geopolitical balance of the region.

No.  I was R at the time.  It was the Iraq war that made me change my identification from R as I was opposed to it from the beginning, even in 2002.  I did not vote for a GOP candidate (except judges) after 2003 until 2008.  Up until then every vote I ever cast has been for GOP.
So you didn't start voting GOP again until they blew up the world economy?

In 2008 I was going to vote Libertarian again mostly because McCain was pro-Iraq war.  Even during the 2003-2008 period I was and still very aligned with the GOP economic agenda, at least relative to the Democratic agenda.  My DW who detests Obama convinced me to vote McCain in 2008 but my heart was not in it.  After Obama's victory it was me that overtook even my DW in my negativity toward the Obama regime that drove me back to voting GOP.  In my household it is always a competition between me and my DW on who despises Obama more.
