The state that wasn't represented by John C. Calhoun, Strom Thurmond, and Lindsey Graham.

South Carolina is, by the way, the only place I've heard the last two spoken of favorably.

I once asked someone in SC "you do know what Thurmond is known for where I live, right?"

He responded "I don't know, I know that (something about a university)."

Hearing the Lindsey Graham adds on the radio stations was just painful.

South Carolina, duh!

I just don't get the Thurmond hate here, at least not to the level of considering him worse than other politicians of his era.  For a 1940s Southern politician he was a moderate, which was precisely why he was selected as the standard-bearer of the Dixiecrats in 1948.  If you're going to get in arms about an old South Carolina politician, Ben "Pitchfork" Tillman is a far more deserving target.  Even for his time, he was an evil racist reactionary.

I also don't get the level of hate directed towards Graham.  If he'd made social issues a priority, I could, but that's never been a focus of his unlike some Republicans.

North Carolina doesn't have a deep history of racism.

North Carolina doesn't have a deep history of racism.
Even at the height of Jim Crow, South Carolina never managed the complete expulsion of blacks from the voter rolls like North Carolina did.  We had more notable incidents than our northern neighbor, but the idea that they were less racist is laughable.

Its the same way with Helms here in NC, at least in rural areas. "Old Jesse did such and such..." and his national reputation doesn't register.

That's largely due to foreign policy disagreements, not on social issues.

I like both states but for different reasons..........that being said, Myrtle Beach sounds just great, so I think I'll vote SC.

Why does Myrtle Beach sound great? I've been there, and it's not the sort of place it'd seem like you'd be a fan of--Hilton Head seems more your speed, or some of the very exclusive islands near Charleston.
