How do you know whether he was murdered?  That's really unfair to the officer who may have justifiably used deadly force based on the article.

1. because he was unarmed

2. because nobody with half a brain, at this point, should believe the mealy-mouthed formulation that the officer was "faced with a threat". we heard it after walter scott. we heard it after tamir rice.  police have no credibility on this kind of statement anymore.

That's ridiculous.  You can't just jump to conclusions like that.

if this had happened in a vacuum you would be right, but it didn't.

I wonder when we will find out the ethnicities of the police involved in Freddy Gray's arrest.  Since Baltimore has a significant black presence in its police force I'm wondering how likely it is that some of the police involved were black, and if this is so, whether letting that news out might help to defuse the racial aspects involved in the Baltimore disturbances.
Probably not.  Form the reporting I heard on NPR last night, it appears the residents there view it more as a class problem than a race problem.

Considering how precarious (and small-especially compared to its white counterpart) the black middle class is...hard to separate class from race in practical terms.

some real damage in Baltimore today

Ernest felt the need to remove my statement (and assign 3 death points) telling (presumably, the people in the picture above) to "have fun" and avoid getting arrested.  which I don't understand at all, it can only in the most oblique fashion be read as an endorsement of violence of any kind.

And how is any average person who doesn't watch riot coverage 24/7 supposed to know that? If the context is relevant to how something is viewed, it's the poster's responsibility to provide it.

this is one Hell of a standard, basically dictated by Corporate media.  if the goal is to remove any "inciting a riot" content from the Forum I'm on board with that (and I try hard myself to tread the line). your standard goes way, way above any such concern and attempts to control the parameters of opinion.

why care what the average person thinks?  law enforcement is what we've got to worry about here.

This kind of vicious lawlessness is why many people feel uncomfortable in urban areas
I wonder who feels more uncomfortable: the white people from the suburbs who come to watch the ball game, or the people who have to live in abject poverty, surrounded by crime and vice, and forced to send their children to terrible schools because the tax base fled when the real estate covenants were ruled unconstitutional.

Tax base is an important issue, which violence has a big effect on.  But Baltimore has a lot of public spending, and a higher per-pupil spending than America as a whole (though higher cost per resource also).  People need jobs also, which requires also a variety of shops and economic activity and investment you are not going to see in an area where people cannot count on themselves and their property being safe.

a plainclothes NYPD was shot in the head last night in Kew Gardens, Queens, NY.  he's in "critical but stable" condition.

http://news.yahoo.com/police-officer-shot-rushed-hospital-nyc-231850914.html

they have a suspect in custody.  he looks the part and has a criminal record, incl. attempted murder, but as of now they haven't found the weapon, and the suspect maintains his innocence.

the family of NYPD officer Brian Moore elected to take him off of life support, and he has died.

link

the suspect, Demetrius Blackwell is in custody and maintains his innocence.  looks like he has a court-appointed lawyer at this time; hopefully, a "real lawyer" will step up to the plate if there is a case to be made.  Prosecution still does not have the weapon.

video has surfaced of the 2012 death of Sgt. James Brown, 26.  Brown choked to death in a Texas jail while serving a two-day jail sentence.  he was restrained and forced to wear a mask.  he said some version of "I can't breathe" at least 20 times, but SWAT team members refused to removed the mask.  he had previously served two tours of duty in Iraq.

Thanks to the Guardian, we now all know where we're most likely to be murdered by a cop in 2015, among other things

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2015/jun/01/the-counted-police-killings-us-database

(Shades indicate groups of 5 states; reds are in the top half in per-capita and greens are in the bottom half per-capita; the darkest green shade has 6 due to inclusion of DC)

And to think most probably envision it as a Southern problem...

Nevada is an interesting anomaly.

From what I recall hearing, Las Vegas has basically taken the Justice Department's recommendations and implemented them fully. Since the population of Nevada is so heavily concentrated there, that probably explains a whole lot of this.

Coincidentally, most of the states which lack a death penalty statute (15 out of 20, if we include DC and the recent adition of Nebraska as a non-capital punishment state) seem to be located within the green areas.

Kind of depressing about NM. I blame the absolutely abysmal APD...

Doesn't surprise me that California is ahead of Texas. Another reason why Texas is better.

this site tracks law enforcement killings.  they have counted 510 homicides by law enforcement in the USA so far in 2015, right on pace with 2014's 1100.
