I used to golf.  from ages 10 through 21 or so.  never was very good but I got very hot... this will be a long story.

my friends and I participated in something called the Dix Hills Invitational, a two-day tournament on a local 9-hole golf course.  1 round on Day 1, 2 rounds on Day 2.

I won in 2007 by over 15 strokes.

in 2008 I was down 9 strokes with 10 holes to play.  at which point I caught absolute fire.  I was driving the green from 250 yards away.  I was scoring frickin birdies.  something about the unity of the physical and the external was so beautiful.  I could do what I wanted with the golf ball.

I made up a dozen strokes to take a 3 shot lead with 2 to play.  I gave away 2 strokes on each of the final 2 holes, an utter Van de Velde level choke, to lose by a single shot.

I suppose I'm still guilty cuz some of your ancestors owned slaves or took land from Indians.  Mine didn't, in fact.  They were being sh**t on in Europe or being superior to 'the States' up in Area 51 (Canada).  Only after the slaves were freed and the Indians relieved of duty did my family weasel in.  They made the mistake of being beckoned by ambassadorial friendship into Michigan where they immediately proceeded through the gateway to the west and upon noticing that meant Missouri, scattered to the four corners of the earth (many in Nebraska where they could feel good knowing every time a Nebraska cornfed cow farted the stink would blow right over Iowa into Chicago, then Michigan...then where it belonged...back in Ontario.)

Actually......the most famous American to do Blackface, Al Jolson, was certainly not a racist.  He is widely credited as being one of the more important people in introducing black music to white audiences and fought to get black people on stage in "white" places.

But yes, blackface originated, at least in the US, because white audiences wanted to see black people in art (usually portrayed negatively), without actually seeing black people.
