http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/fbi-overstated-forensic-hair-matches-in-nearly-all-criminal-trials-for-decades/2015/04/18/39c8d8c6-e515-11e4-b510-962fcfabc310_story.html

The Justice Department and FBI have formally confirmed that for a two decade period that preceded 2000, nearly every forensic examiner in an elite FBI unit gave flawed testimony against criminal defendants, specifically noting 268 cases of hair analysis. Of those 268, 257 had flawed forensic testimony, and 32 were Death Penalty cases.

Of the 32 Death Penalty Cases, 14 have either been executed or died in prison.

Damning and disturbing, but not surprising.  Pseudoscience has had a place in criminal prosecutions since forever. So a person gets fried based on evidence that doesn't meet the Frye standard.  Next big "scientifically reliable" thing for determining guilt: brain scans.

Well, no. Those aren't cops, but forensic examiner and most of those most likely didn't willingly lie. They were told to use that method to analyse evidence and were led to think it was a proper scientifical method.
