Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand proposes boosting voter rolls

At a time of strict voter ID laws and low-turnout elections, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wants to beef up voter rolls in New York and nationwide with a bill to expand online registration.

The Voter Registration Modernization Act would make states set up ways for voters to register online and offer $15 million in grants. For the 25 states that offer residents the opportunity to register online, more forms of identification would be accepted; in New York, only those with a state-issued ID like a driver's license can use the online registration.

"When it comes to voting, we are still living in the 20th century because only half of our nation is eligible to register to vote online," said Gillibrand, who is introducing the bill Monday.

Gillibrand said the bill has been discussed with a dozen Republican senators.

Excellent stuff, but I doubt Republicans will pass it because they are afraid that every eligible person gets the chance to vote.

The Kardashians are more newsworthy than a bill being introduced in this Congress.

Online voter registration opens door to voter fraud, hacking etc.  Can't imagine why Democrat Party wants this!

Online voter registration opens door to people actually voting, more participation from minorities, lower class, etc. Can't imagine why Republican Party doesn't want this!

It's reality. It's naive if you think that voter integrity won't be compromised with being able to click a button online. Democrats want to make it easier to cheat, and it is very, very disturbing. Republicans never should have went for "early voting," "Provisional voting," and "no excuse absentee voting." Sane societies do not understand our voting system. Even the UN observers who came to America in 2012 were shocked that we didn't have voter ID

Then how is it that every time Republicans go out to find evidence of voter fraud (specifically the kind that voter ID is supposed to prevent), they find nothing?

And if Voter ID is so great, why haven't Republicans championed bills to give all American citizens free (as in, the citizen in question does not have to pay for it directly) voter ID? Why is it the financial burden of a citizen to have to prove who they are, rather than having the cost distributed throughout a society?

Online registration, when tied to the motor vehicle database including non-driver state ids, is actually more secure than traditional paper registration with some precinct worker. The database will have verifiable facts like age, address, photo id, and citizenship status.

Voter turnout in Canada has been consistently higher than the United States in recent times, because we have online voter registration.  In the 2008 federal election, turnout was the lowest on record, but was still higher than all recent American presidential elections, thanks to online voter registration.

Freedom bill.

We have online voter registration? I just remember getting a letter for Election Office a few months before I turned 18 saying me I'll be added on electoral rolls then if I don't send them a refusal form.

I never got such a letter from the elections office.  I just registered online.

Great but isn't anything electronic susceptible to shenanigans?

Ok, fair enough - but I think that would open the door even further. With electronic voting, how do you have bipartisan pollwatchers? How can anyone report anything suspicious to the proper people?
