I think that Sanders could paint Cruz as an obstructionist who would lead us backwards. I'd say that this is one of the best paths for a Sanders win. It would be pretty close though.

They're both at the far ends of their respective ideology, but I think Cruz has a better shot because of the right of center leanings of the country as a whole. But I could also see a third party challenger rise due to both of their ideologies.

I bet that a "centrist" third party candidate backed by Wall Street would emerge and end up winning wealthy suburban areas. Though I'd still guess a narrow Sanders victory. Cruz (his horrible politics aside) just comes off as too smarmy and I think would lose to any Democrat.

If Sanders had the same views but called himself something other than a Socialist, I think he could win.

His problem is one of branding rather than substance.

Cruz narrowly. The party would be more energetic about his candidacy, for sure.

And also independent moderates would be freaked out by him....

And they won't be freaked out by someone openly proclaiming himself to be a Socialist?

This is why a Perot-esque third-party candidate would probably emerge. Although in this day and age, it'd be hard to see them gaining any traction. They could definitely throw the election to one candidate or the other though, depending on what kinds of voters they attract.

Cruz is a craven and very dishonest individual. Sanders, on the other hand, is an honest public servant.

Yeah, Cruz is going to win in a landslide.

Sanders is, actually, a pleasant guy. Cruz is not. However radical Sanders is, he would create a generally sympathetic atmosphere around it. Cruz would scare people. It is more like the only way Sanders wins Smiley

People respond way more to fear than pleasantries. Cruz runs the table.

Well, here pleasantry and fear work in the same direction. Some people would vote for Sanders because he is pleasant, others will vote against Cruz because he is scary. The important thing is, nobody would vote against Sanders because he is pleasant and nobody (except, perhaps, of a few members of some masochist bondage society) would vote for Cruz because they are afraid of him Smiley
