I just watched "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" and I thought it would be fun to start a topic to discuss whether Jeff Smith was a Republican or a Democrat.  Well?

Well, all signs in character and outlook point to Democrat, but the fact that he was from upper New England point to Republican at the time the film was made.

I agree with Opebo. He would be a republican.....however had it been 2005 rather than 1939 it could've gone either way (I'd say democrat). Opebo: how do you know he is from Northern New England. I don't remember that part.

What?

Watch the movie again.  He is from Missouri.

Democrat, probably.

Oh I was thinking of some other Jimmy Stewart treacle.  Yes, Missouri in the 30's or 40's would clearly be Democrat.  That fits the character's persona better.

Who knows about 1939, but if he was honest he'd definitely be a Democrat today.

It says Missouri in the movie, I'm pretty sure.

I'll have to watch the movie again, it's been such a long time since I've seen it. Anyway, I thought he would have to be a Democrat. He would almost have to be, being chosen by the governor to replace a Senator in Missouri in the 1930s. Also, there were a few clues in the movie that led me to believe that he was part of the majority party.

He was  a New Deal Southern Populist.

Or he may have just been an Indepedent out of anger over the corruption in D.C.

This is weird, I thought they said in the movie quite clearly that he was from California! Are we all thinking of the same "Mr. Smith goes to Washington"? As to his party it was my impression that he was a Democrat since that was the party with the majority when the movie was made (They mention in the movie that Smith is in the majority party).

Democratat the start.  Based mainly on the party in power and all that.  Add to that the fact that the party is full of corruption and graft , well, you ae left with no other option.

After he recovers from his fall he would become a Republican.  Can you blame him?
