I read a number of times, that actor George Clooney is considered a potential contender for California gubernatorial election in 2018; becoming the the Democratic Arnie. How serious is that? And how are his chances to beat Gavin Newsom? Other than Clooney, he as political experience and conections.

I have heard about this as well.

Clooney is a fine actor, but please no more actors in such offices without any polictical experience. Arnie's only success was the environemt; he leaved a budget mess and Jerry, an experienced politican, clined it up in his first term. I would support Clooney with more experience; so he should run for the State Legislature at first. I endorse Newsom, he's a charismatic and comptetent figure.

But I think it would be close in primary contest between Clooney and Newsom. Clooney is likely seen as more charismatic while Newsom as the edge in political skills.

God awful, though I suppose it's better than him making god awful movies.

His filmography is a mixed bag.

Good:  The Perfect Storm, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Syriana, Ides of March, The Descendants

Bad: Batman & Robin, Leatherheads, The Men Who Stare At Goats, The Momuments Men

Move every non-Coen brothers film minus that one where he's a Hawaiian to the bad category. He's only okay when a non-hack director handles him.

Hell no... Clooney's a great actor, but he's better off being a great actor.

I don't mind Gavin Newsom being Governor, but if we did have a serious challenger (to Newsom) emerge, I would love for it to be either Karen Bass or John Chiang.

Speaking of actors running for Governor, I sure wish John Goodman would run for governor of Missouri.

He'd pull a Huckabee and lose a bunch of weight in office, then run for president. Lose, then write a book about food, then run again. #Ready4Goodman

I actually suspect Goodman might be a Democrat, despite his portrayal of Republicans on The West Wing and Alpha House.

I suspect he might if there was an opening... which there isn't. Of course, there's no need to feel confined to California, and I'd imagine he'd do better in the Senate....

Couldn't you say that for most actors?

Anyway, I honestly think he won't run. Doesn't show much initiative to run at least. He probably could beat Newsom, but it'd be a tougher fight than he might want.

Oh, I thought you meant Kentucky governor this year.

Either way, hope and pray he never runs for anything.

There is a level of that. But with a lot of actors, they can shine above those movies. It's also his regular selection of directors - he settles with political hacks who can't film like Soderbergh, and the results are obvious. I mean, Oliver Stone is the most craven political hack in film, but damn can that man make a movie.

Clooney is the logical choice due to the fact; he is a liberal version of John Wayne; just like Schwarzenegger is.

Newsome, however is Lt Gov, but is only a nice guy. Gladly vote for someone other than he.

a Newsom/Clooney/Villaraigosa race would be great for the latter.  let the liberal pretty boys destroy each other and come up on top in the primary with 36%, fueled by a near-monopoly on the Hispanic vote.

California Democrats aren't going to let Clooney cut in line, and I doubt he'd want to run in a contested primary.

"[insert celebrity] to run for [insert office]?"

"No."

Applies to nearly* every scenario.

Liberals don't actually like Newsom.
