De facto it'll be Stewart Hosie, tho Milliband is likely to have the title.

I expect Cameron to still technically be the Prime Minister for a few days at least.

This. Though if you're saying who the PM would be within about a month or so, Milliband.

No.

Anyway, it will probably be Cameron for a few days, then Miliband. I doubt the resulting parliament lasts the full term (although in fairness, I said that about last parliament)

Ed M!

With the current polling numbers I just don't see a result were Tories + LibDems + NI Unionists manage to get a majority together, and in that case a Labour led government is the only reasonable outcome.

Would Ed Miliband be the first atheist British PM? (And the second one of Jewish ancestry?)

Apparently James Callaghan was an atheist.

The current Coalition will govern as a minority government.

Would Ed Miliband be the first atheist British PM? (And the second one of Jewish ancestry?)

The second question is easy enough: he would be the first Ashkenazi Jew to be Prime Minister (latter day converso Disraeli was Sephardic) though actually the third Prime Minister to have some Jewish ancestry (Callaghan's grandmother was Jewish).

Although it's possible that he would be the first to use the word, the other question is a little complicated partly because of the existence of a state church (which means that 'CofE' can be - and used to be even more in the past - an acceptable default answer of someone who is in practice a) entirely irreligious and b) has no real attachment to the CofE even), partly because the media used to be extremely deferential towards politicians and did not pry about anything personal, and partly because the electorate has never really cared much about the beliefs of politicians. In general it's easier to list Prime Ministers who were definitely religious than those who weren't. There are some odd cases as well (i.e. Attlee was not religious and never pretended to be but he had a strong attachment to Anglicanism in a cultural sense and also believed in its moral structures. Arguably this made him a better Anglican than certain Bishops. Whereas Callaghan... well even people who knew him well were never certain of his actual views, even if he remained culturally very much a Baptist). He would certainly be the first to be definitely not a Christian in any sense (including absolutely nominal), however.

Sir Jeremy Heywood after the whole thing gets totally botched. Cameron resigns and the Queen is unable to appoint, leaving her no choice but to ask the Cabinet Secretary to take charge on a caretaker basis before another election can be held. (In the event that some other caretaker is found, that person probably only acts as a rubber stamp to whatever Sir Jeremy recommends).

May sound crazy, but there is a sequence of events that could lead to this.

No. LD won't join a coalition which is not a majority.

Cameron. If only because Milliband hasn't cobbled a coalition together for a few days.

Leaning slightly toward Miliband, but neither result would surprise me.

Here is my rather weak prediction map, using the Electoral Calculator and several recent polls. I highly doubt this will be close to accurate, but I gave it a go.

Labor: 288
Conservative: 280
Liberal Democrat: 13
Scottish National: 47
UKIP: 4
Green: 1
Plaid Cymru: 3
Respect: 1
Northern Ireland: 18

Eastleigh seems like it is going closer to the Conservatives than UKIP, but I started working on this a few days ago. I'm not going to insult our British posters by pretending I know anything about Northern Ireland.

Mecha Prediction: There will be many delicious British tears.  The only thing that really matters.

Looks like my polling based prediction was dead wrong, but I was right that my earlier Cameron would remain in power.

Looks like the SNP scared the crap out of Conservative voters and sent them all to the polls....

Cameron seems to have it in the bag.
