Where would they be now? I'm talking things like Coverdell not dying out of nowhere or Kerry being named SoS. Or when would Kennedy, Byrd, and Inouye have called it quits?

Kerry would still be in the senate. He declared he was running for reelection in 2014, but changed his mind when offered the Sos Position. Coverdell would only be in his 70s if alive today, so I'd imagine he'd still be there, but he'd be in his last or next to last term. Byrd would have retired in 2012. Inouye would be retiring next year, when his seat comes up. Kennedy might have had one more term in him, but no more than that.

Any other cases you can think of?

Lautenberg (NJ), who would have retired in 2014.

Wellstone: President?

Carnahan: If he could win while dead, he should have been able to win at least another term or two while alive.

Kerry, Byrd, Inouye: Still in the Senate.

Wellstone: Still in the Senate. Possibly could have served as VP/President.

Carnahan, Kennedy: Retires in 2012. Seat is probably still held because Carnahan living doesn't butterfly Akin away. McCaskill could run for governor, and Robin Carnahan would most likely succeed her father.

Byrd died in his 90s. Running for another term was completely out of the question for him.

Doesn't matter. Byrd and Inouye were going to stick around in the Senate until they died. Possibly Ted too.

I can't help but wonder who would win the Dem primary to replace Inouye next year, had he not passed.

It would probably be Tulsi Gabbard

He specifically and clearly wanted Hanabusa to be his successor

This, hence why we now have Senator Colleen Hanabusa (D-HI).

Lol, maybe she'd have had a better shot in a primary where he's alive and has endorsed her to succeed him. But in general, I refer to you what Brewer said.

Very nearly did. Schatz only won the primary on incumbency.

Byrd was a lifer and didn't have to "run" in order to win.

This is easier to do for people who died suddenly, like Paul Wellstone, than people like Byrd and Inouye. Because even if for some reason their hearts chose to keep going for a bit longer, they're still in their 90's and could've easily died a week later.
