West Wing definitely had a more Democratic skew to it than House of Cards does.

Frank Underwood barely is a Democrat, to be fair.

He really could be either. Sometimes you have to be reminded that it focuses on Democrats. West Wing basically serves as Sorkin's soapbox at times. And Josh, as much of a great character he is, makes DWS look like Olympia Snowe.

House of Cards, like Veep, is politics and power, not ideology. The West Wing is sort of like a love note to the liberal administration we didn't election in 2000.

The West Wing, and this is one of many reasons it's a hundred times better than House of Cards.

West Wing could have been written by an ATLAS poster.  Take that as you will.

House of Cards is supposed to be about the corruption of power and the power of corruption and blahblahblah but the American version seems to fall between the dark and gritty Snyderian lighting along with a willfull egotistical and downright shameless suspension of reality that one would expect more out of an early eighties Pink Floyd music video than a "polidrama".

Frank Underwood is Pink.

West Wing was more realistic in the sense that it actually showed events that could plausibly occur, unlike HoC. But, I think HoC is better and way less partisan.

Sorkin is the type of guy who can't think about the other party winning without crying in his sleep, forget about actually making it happen in one of his TV Shows.

And whoever came after him, too. I refer you to the 2006 election

His name is John Wells and if you knew anything you would know that the writer's room was fiercely divided over who should win the 2006 election on the show. The death of John Spencer, they felt, drove them into a storytelling corner where they felt the show would be ending too much on a downer with both a Santos loss and Spencer's death. It was extremely plausible the way they set up the collapse in support for Vinick a few weeks before the election. You may disagree with the storytelling choice but I think it's wrong to be flippant about the choice the writers made for the 2006 election result.

Actually that's a myth. The Santos win was written long before Spencer died. The only reason they kept it so ambiguous was because the writers ended up really, really liked how Vinick turned out, so it became an actual contest in the writers' room. I get it that Leo's death made the win needed then, but had Spencer lived, then Santos winning would be bollocks.

West Wing was a very Democratic show, but to be fair, that was where the moral compass of the show was.

House of Cards has no moral compass.

West Wing is by far a more liberal and ideological show than House of Cards. The only good Republicans on the show were the ones that agreed with the Democrats.

I do wish Arnie won sometimes because maybe we could've had another season that focused on his administration with Josh as DNC Chairman and maybe Sam running for office.

I've always thought that it could've ended in the middle of Vinicks first term or so, and then have the final scene be Josh and Sam, who is elected to something himself now, replicating the Leo/Bartlet napkin flashback or whatever you wanna call it.
