I think it's a decent question since I've seen people defend him on this very site.

Indian Removal Act, enough said. A vile human being, people who find him likeable are just plain crazy and maybe even racist.

I will say that even though I find him a loathsome human being, his dedication to his wife is something I really admire. That is one thing I certainly give him.

Mostly negative but I no longer blame him for the Indian Removal Act as I believe more recently that there is an argument that he was seriously working to preserve Native American rights due to inevitable clashes with settlers, but it didn't work in practice. If that was truly his intent, and he felt remorse then, I'd be some what pleased, but judging by other character traits, it's hard to tell what an early 1800s westerner's mindset would be especially when they are far from a unanimous group in mindset. Throw in that he shared a ticket and ideology with a New Yorker, and it's not easy to get into his motives through logical reasoning. But he obviously kept a lot of that southern frontiersman mindset with dueling, etc. You just can't tell.

Lean Negative, though I do love the fact that the national debt was actually eliminated for part of his tenure.

Jackson is criticized for the IRA, but Lincoln is praised by you guys even though he caused a war murdering 600,000 Americans and didn't care about slavery? Lol ok

Yeah, how dare he launch Fort Sumter into the Confederate cannonballs!

To be fair, do you think that war would not have happened even if the Rebels hadn't attacked Fort Sumter?

Although I would say the South started the war by leaving the Union in the first place.

Right, because Southerners played no role in starting the Civil War. They were just sitting around on their plantations, illegally importing slaves, shooting at federal troops, rigging elections in Kansas, and trying to start a rebellion, when for NO REASON evil President Lincoln decided that his oath to "preserve, protect, and defend" the Union actually meant something.

As for your comment about slavery... good grief, read his Second Inaugural. Or the Gettysburg Address. Or any of his speeches from the Lincoln-Douglass debates. It's pretty clear that he was morally opposed to slavery, though his position on how best to resolve the issue evolved over time (much as the South's argument for why the war was necessary has evolved).
