So the questions are:
- can a GOPer support a path to citizenship and win the nomination?
- can a GOPer win the general without a path to citizenship?
Unfortunately the answer to both questions is 'unlikely'
Hell yeah, man! Republicans NEED to embrace Immigration Reform to win over the all-important Hispanic vote! I mean, remember when Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act back in 1986 and turned Hispanics into a solid Republican voting bloc?
Oh, wait, you mean that DIDN'T happen? You mean to tell me that the percentage of Hispanics voting Republican DECREASED from 37% in 1984 to 30% in 1988??? Aw shucks, LV, for a second I thought we were on to something there.
If this was how things worked, African Americans would still vote Republican because they helped them out on that slavery issue back in the day.
