Question: Your son is turning into a Yellow Avatar
#1
Strongly intervene. No son of mine is going to be a Yellow Avatar!

#2
Gently remind him he won't get a date to the Prom if he wears a V for Vendetta mask

#3
Kick him out of the house. No safety net for him.

#4
Not care. If he wants to be an outcast, that is his prerogative.

#5
Be disappointed but hope he will outgrow that nonsense

We would find a cabin in the woods and go all Thoreauvian while we contemplate together the nature of liberty.

Teenage boys are all libertarians.  It's a stage of development, even if many people never progress past it.

Can confirm. #5 worked for me.

Depends on their age and the class of libertarian. If they're still 18 year olds having hards on for gold and the Paul's, then they get the intervention.

My son used to be a libertarian, we took him to god and he finally understood. Pray the Libertarian away worked. His "liberomo" friends came over and tried to do liberomo things with him. Now he sits in his room with tissues and lotion. Tissues for the tears of missing Rand, and lotion to cover the windows with so the government drones can't peek in.

I'd play devil's advocate against him just like I do my SJW daughter, my conservative son, my apolitical daughter and my all over the map wife.  One guess as to which of the 4 takes it the worst and always ends up screaming at me Wink (hint, not the wife...she screams at me for other things)

also, anybody that would let politics ruin a parent/kid relationship is a HUGE asshole.  There are plenty of other good reasons to ruin that relationship!

If he manages to get past being a Red Diaper Baby and chooses libertarianism for himself, that's all fine and good. I wouldn't disown the kid for not agreeing with me. I'd be disappointed, but hey, that's the price of letting people choose their own path.

Option 5.  As awful as libertarianism is, I believe that children have a right to their own views and their own consciences, and that consideration trumps.  And most libertarians do outgrow it, eventually.

They'd have to become a Gamergater or something like that for me to actually stage an intervention.

My hypothetical son can beieve whatever he wants.

Not sure if him growing up with a Democratic partisan and politically involved father (and probably mother as well, since those are my circles primarily) will draw him closer to the party or away from it. Guess it depends on the person. From experience, those kids are usually the same - staunchly aligned with their parents' party - but I've definitely seen it go the opposite way where they are repelled by the obnoxiousness and take on different beliefs because of it, especially as they grow older.

In my case I grew up in a partisan Democratic family and while my views haven't changed a great deal I haven't been a partisan Democrat in years and have become more of a left independent pretty critical of both parties while still reluctantly acknowledging Democrats to be the lesser of two evils in many cases.

Opt. 2 as a joke, the fifth seems automatic.

Might as well have some gentle ribbing.
