The Daily Mail is saying that one of the campaigns is about to call for the count to be delayed/the contest extended by three days.

Considering people still haven't got their ballots it's on the cards. Although you can vote online (At-least I could as a member, and so could my mate who was a £3)

The Mayoral race result is announced on Friday morning - the day before the leadership and deputy leadership.

If Khan/Abbott get a big share between them we can count a Corbyn victory as nearly certain

And another thing that Corbyn's going to have to spend time explaining

I'm fairly sure that all these "Corbyn attended - X - event" controversies will end as soon as it's clear they don't hurt him.

And I don't even know how he is going to explain that.

Watch Shirley Williams in this clip from 0:38 (after losing her seat in 1979): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b20Td5fFoTs

Basically she is saying that the voters were mistaken and selfish in their decision; refreshingly honest and a far cry from many of today's modernisers.

I can not understand why Labour didn't get back in power until 18 years later with that attitude. Roll Eyes

Interesting comment given that Shirley Williams was out of the Labour Party about eighteen months after that clip.

The presenter looks like he should be fronting an Open University programme Cheesy

1979 was all about the Winter Of Discontent and Callaghan's mishandling of his 5% incomes policy coupled with a couple of weak and irresponsible union leaders such as Moss Evans. It was nothing to do with voters being selfish.

I more or less agree, but I admire the way she didn't mince words like most of today's politicians. Though those were the days before everything was put under a microscope by the 24/7 media.

Because today's politicians are terrified of anything they say being brought up again and again by their opponents (such as the note left in treasury by the outgoing Labour government in 2010 about there being no money left which Cameron used again and again in the recent general election).

1979 is interesting as Callaghan could (and probably would) have won had he called an election in October 1978. He also probably would have won had his government not lost the vote of confidence in March 1979 by one vote and soldiered on until September/October 1979.

The only way Maggie Thatcher could have won was the (pretty unlikely) way it actually happened in the otl and as we all know the ramifications of that election result has been enormous and ever lasting for the UK.

That must have haunted Callaghan for the rest of his days.

Comparisons between Brown and Callaghan are always interesting to look at-although Brown was 100x better Chancellor than Callaghan ever was

Looking at the london mayoral polls if Khan+Abbot get 50% between them then I'd say that represents a big victory for the left in london (Although Khan voters could vote Cooper/Burham since he's only from the soft left)

I'm starting to think this will turn out like the 2007 deputy leadership race-lots of big names with the favourite (Alan Johnson-Tessa Jowell) doing well in the first round only to beaten by a more left candidate with broader appeal ( Harriet Harman-Sadiq Khan)

YouGov have actually just released a new poll on the London race. Amongst 2015 Labour voters it is (excluding undecideds): Jowell 37, Khan 26, Lammy 17, Abbott 14, rest 6. You would imagine that Khan and Abbott are doing better amongst the people who are voting in the contest.

Another interesting Akehurst piece here. Obviously he stands where he stands (and you might want to factor that in to what he writes I guess) but its worth your time.

The thing is, assuming Corbyn wins, he's going to be doing so against the wishes of 80%+ of the parliamentary party and around half of the actual party membership. Being seen as having only won by union and £3 votes is not a good start - Ed Miliband had that problem after all.

Holy finks, that's just devastating. I can't help but feel PMQs might not be Corbyn's strong suit...
