Two endorsements of note today: UCATT (building trades) has endorsed Burnham. This is the first TU endorsement to not go to Corbyn. And Progress has endorsed Kendall. I'm sure you are all very very surprised at this development.

So? Gladstone was a crank. Didn't stop him from becoming PM.

That was a long time ago. I can't see him becoming PM in this day and age. Mind you, the same could be said for most if not all of the PM's who served during that era.

I think what happens is that what-if wank goes in the what-if forum and not here.

Sigh.

Didn't think I needed to put a smiley after that one, guess I was wrong.

But who doesn't like the idea of a man who regularly visits prostitutes (to give them stern moral lectures, he claims!) as Prime Minister?

What do you all think of the idea that an "advantage" of putting Corbyn in, is that once the new Tory leader is known for the next election, than Corbyn can be dumped for the most suitable person to run against the said new Tory leader, so put him in now as a seat warmer caretaker precisely because he is so "dumpable?" Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph is urging operation chaos to get Corbyn in. Fun stuff.

The thing is Corbyn does hold some positions very dear to me. Unilateral disarmament, a genuine loathing of the arms trade, completely comprehensive education, pro-Palastine, huge animal rights supporter, a republian and (supporters aside) a member of the True Left that isn't annoying, self-defeating or a gigantic prick.

I don't even think many of the (southern) Irish support a United Ireland any more; more trouble than it's worth for them.

A Corbyn win with Farron winning LibDem could change the power structure within the centre-left completely

I meant republican in the sense of abolishing the monarchy, as much as I hate Orangemen.

I doubt the centre-left will put any trust in LibDem for the next election cycle, regardless of who they nominate.

Useful reminder on the timetable of everything: ballots are sent out on the 14th of August and voting closes on the 10th of September.

I would ultimately like the reestablishment of the traditional Anglo-Saxon Witenagomit. Finally end the failure of 1066.

Anyway that's by the by right now.

Currently the gaffe of the day is a Cooper supporter praising Cooper as a 'mum', in a seemingly passive aggressive attack on Kendall who is childless.

Watching the Sunday Politics right now.

Interesting that Corbyn said a Labour government should borrow in the future for investment and infrastructure. In an ideal world current spending should run in a balanced way.

Not sure that's a traditional Bennite position.

He's pitching himself quite cleverly right now I think.

It's not polled often, but there is some data.

On support within the republic for a united Ireland:

You wonder how that would change if the issue became a serious one again.

Also Jas, you're posting on the wrong Atlas. Come to the dark side!

I stand corrected, but I see it's dropped a lot in recent years. Is it really something people get worked up about?

It's desirable in theory but not considered to be likely to be on the agenda any time soon unless something unexpected happens in Northern Ireland. 2010 - in the middle of the economic collapse and the lead-up to the bail-out - was probably the peak for the feeling that the Republic was a failed state.

Leadership candidates who actually want to win aren't going to vote against the whip immediately before the election because if they *are* elected then they would find it... hard... to impose discipline.
