2010 - in the middle of the economic collapse and the lead-up to the bail-out - was probably the peak for the feeling that the Republic was a failed state.

There was such a feeling?

One of the signs of a patriotic Irishman - disparaging Ireland.

Interesting piece by Nick Cohen.

Here's an excerpt:

In truth, a Corbyn victory wouldn’t lead to a coup but a shambles. The far-left Labour campaign group has only 10 MPs which is not enough to fill a shadow cabinet. More to the point Corbyn did not expect to win. He ran only to “give Labour party members a voice in this debate”. A Corbyn victory would be more than a disaster Labour didn’t see coming. It would be a disaster Corbyn didn’t see coming, and wouldn’t know what to do with.

Some more TU endorsement news: USDAW (shopworkers union: always one of the most right-wing unions) have backed Burnham and Community (mostly steelworkers: again, always one of the most right-wing unions) have backed Cooper.

I've always wondered if Kendall was just playing up to the progess bloc, she's not. If she continues like this Corbyn could get my highly valued 3rd preference

Leadership candidates who actually want to win aren't going to vote against the whip immediately before the election because if they *are* elected then they would find it... hard... to impose discipline.

Problem with Corbyn is that he's never held a front bench post, Cabinet or Shadow Cabinet. Thrusting him to the top job like that will be problematic. Also, considering his viewpoints, if I was in David Cameron's shoes, I'd be rather concerned about giving him the Privy Councillor status that comes with the title of Leader of the Opposition i.e. access to some pretty secret information.

(Does Angus Robertson have PC status?)

The Privy Council is the official channel used by the PM when briefing opposition politicians on national security matters; Harriet Harman was informed about some IS stuff the other day through it.

YouGov have conducted a poll...

Corbyn - 43%
Burnham - 26%
Cooper - 20%
Kendall - 11%

Corbyn ahead of Burnham 53%-47% in the final round.

Watson has big lead in the Deputy contest.

There are good reasons to be skeptical about polls of internal contests (to say the least), but if that's even close to accurate then we have a bit of a problem in that someone who clearly doesn't want to be elected leader has a chance of actually being elected.

The point is that whether they are 'accurate' or not is even more of a shot in the dark than for a normal election.

Is the Torygraph's idea of Conservatives paying 3£ to vote for Corbyn likely to become a real thing or is it just a fantasy?

Right now it looks as though a dustbin painted red would be doing decently if it were the designated Left candidate.

Maybe she should move to the US. I imagine she, Chukka, Tristram, and her friends would feel much more at home with the Democratic Party.

As for the Privy Council, why exactly could Corbyn not be trusted, and could Cameron plausibly refuse to have him appointed?

EDIT: Also, is it true Corbyn divorced his wife because she wanted to send their son to a grammar school?

I think it's been exaggerated. He and his wife reportedly had issues, perhaps even seperated before that bone of contention.

Can someone explain the deputy leadership candidates to me?

Let's just put it this way, as I'm going to bed:-

Left: Watson - Creasey - Eagle - Flint - Bradshaw :Right

Watson's not particularly left-wing, but a bit bolshy, strong union links and hates Murdoch so the Left are more than happy to have him. Creasey seems like the new left to Watson's old left persona - more professional, tackles issues like loan sharks and feminist/social liberalism concerns. Eagle, seems like a Brownite to me, Flint a definite Blairite and Bradshaw even more so.

I'll leave it to others to expand/correct.
