In sharp contrast to the Election of 1920, in which all three candidates were affiliated with left-leaning reform movements, the main contenders in the Election of 1924 could not be further apart. Running as the American candidate is J. Calvin Coolidge, the incumbent vice president and a prominent advocate for laissez-faire economics. Coolidge is seen by many as the heir to Charles W. Fairbanks' old following, and he is running on a platform opposed to further progressive reforms. His primary opposition is Congressman Upton Sinclair of the Populists, whose supporters are attempting to tie Coolidge to the "Teapot Dome" scandal that has already discredited several members of the Johnson Administration. In response to revelations of large-scale corruption within the government and the oil industry, Sinclair is promising to "clean house" and has been endorsed by many prominent reformers. Last but not least is Al Smith, who four years ago came within a hair of defeating Hiram V. Johnson. The first Democrat to win the popular vote in 22 years, Smith's candidacy has nevertheless seen less momentum than it did four years ago, with many conservatives who supported him in 1920 now flocking to the banner of Calvin Coolidge, and many observers have speculated that should Smith fail to break 20% of the vote it will mean the end of the Democratic Party.

1924 Presidential Election

Congressman Upton Sinclair (People's-California)/ Senator Burton K. Wheeler (People's-Minnessota): 359 Electoral Votes; 50.0% popular votes
Vice President Calvin Coolidge (American-Massachusetts)/ U.S. Ambassador Charles G. Dawes (American-New Jersey): 160 Electoral Votes; 37.5% popular votes
Governor Al Smith (Democratic-New York)/ Senator Carter Glass (Democratic-Virginia): 12 Electoral Votes; 12.5% popular votes

Though Vice President Coolidge did his best to distance himself from the Teapot Dome scandal, the stigma of corruption hanging over the American Party was too great for his candidacy to survive. Running on a reform platform, Congressman Upton Sinclair succeeded in returning the Populists to power for the first time since the presidency of Eugene V. Debs. Meanwhile, Al Smith would fail to match his 1920 performance, garnering just 12% of the vote. Thus, Smith would go down in history as the man who attained both the best and the worst showing for the Democrats in modern times as the party of Van Buren, Johnson, and Cleveland sank into decline.
