Apparently Khan wanted nothing to do with Corbyn and hewed the middle road between Corbyn's socialism and Blair's centrism to win

people have said it further up the page
, but I can really see Kahn deciding tht 4 years is enough and getting reselected for a parliamentary seat at the 2020 election, either to a major cabinet position or front runner for leadership and picking up the pieces after a defeat

The Gorbals' last high rise was flattened today.

Something strangely apt coming as it does after Thursday.

Eddie Izzard has declared an interest in running for the position in 2020 in the past. Yes, that Eddie Izzard.

Andy Burnham announced yesterday that he's running for Greater Manchester Mayor; despite the giggles about a scouse major it's worth noting it's 'Greater Mancester'. Will be worth watching the selection as he's running against the union backed council Leader, and a rich Blairite MP Ivan Lewis.

This is completely unrelated, but how relevant is the issue of abortion in the UK? Are there any pro-life leaders, or pro-life labourites, and are they allowed to vote with their conscience.

Abortion is a conscience vote yes. Laws at present are balanced enough  (despite being quite restrictive in parts) to generally satisfy everyone except the most rabid pro-lifers who are generally a fringe movement who can't get the ear of policy makers or the attention of the public.

They got permission to protest outside a Glasgow hospital earlier this year for the whole of lent and while I ended up on an informal list of people who were planning to escort women to and from appointments we weren't needed as they drifted away after a few days.

The law was deliberately written in such a way as to prevent it from being easily politicised.

There are handful of old Catholic Labour machine pro-life politicians, from what I remember. Not that it comes up much - last parliament there was a minor ruckus from Tory cum reality star "Mad"one Worries, but in general the issue isn't talked about. And of course there is the SDLP.

Perhaps if abortion had been legalised through the legislature and not the Supremes in the US, the issue would be less volatile?

Rumours of a Leadership coup being prepared in the tory party- only need 50 MPS to sign a letter to trigger it (rumours are that about 30 signatures have been kept in a safe since 2010)

Typical London news: the foundation building the world's most useless bridge (it has trees on it!!!!!) has spent two thirds of the public money awarded to it. Pretty impressive considering construction hasn't started.

I'm hoping for Khan to scrap this asap. Unfortunately, he's taking a bit of a soft line on it.

The problem with the bridge is that they've already spend sh**tloads of money on it- Khan should scrap it though

They should build it so it can stand like the Monument as warning to future generations. Although the warning in this case is against spending money on dumb sh**te.

Say the Conservatives lose seats next election and only have ~290MPs.

SNP holds steady at ~55MPs and Conservative losses are absorbed by Lib Dems and Labour.

What coalitions are possible, what coalition is most likely?

Well for starters, you can rule out Con-Lib Dem.

Probably a Conservative minority government. Maybe the unionist parties would join in for about 305-310 votes.

Eh, I didn't realize that the number of MPs is declining next election from 650 to 600.  Assume Conservatives have 45% of MPs (not popular vote), SNP 9%, minor parties their usual.

This could be incredibly stupid of a thought, but does anyone else see Iain Duncan Smith running for the leadership if/when Cameron goes?

I assume he's going to endorse Boris and get appointed to a high post in his cabinet/shadow cabinet.

If he wanted to do that then Gove would be the one to endorse since he's more likely to win

Since when have people been talking up Gove as the likely successor? The last I heard it was all about May and Osborne.
