It seems like, if only for the moment, state Republicans are circling the wagons around Diehl. But there is speculation that he will be forced to resign if the texts are in fact from him(as they pretty much appear to be).

But is it honestly going to effect their electoral fortunes in the state legislature? I would assume probably not.

If Democrats win a few seats in the KC suburbs, St. Louis County, and Jefferson County, they could gain enough seats to sustain vetoes should Democrats hold the governor's mansion. Democrats should have not much better in the 2012 legislative elections, but Nixon didn't campaign for any of the close house seats.

Richardson elected Speaker of the Missouri House.

He's a Republican from Poplar Bluff, the largest town in the bootheel. Democrats in the State Legislature seem to like him much more than Diehl, at least for the moment.

Depending upon your definition of the Bootheel, Poplar Bluff isn't the largest town in Southeast Missouri: among cities in the 8th District, it falls behind Cape Girardeau and Rolla, respectively, according to the 2010 Census; 2013 estimates show that it has fallen to fourth place now behind Farmington. Just throwing that out there

I don't consider Cape or Rolla in the Bootheel, but I guess it could be quibbled over.
