Obama wasn't forced to make Hillary VP under similiar circumstances, and Hillary probably wouldn't make Sanders VP in this situation given his age (among other things).

No way Hillary considers such a thing. She wants to win. Putting Sanders on the ticket would damage her a ton since she'd then be liable for every socialist comment Sanders has ever uttered.

Hillary wouldn't dare piss off her Wall Street base like that.

I'll say yes. It's extremely unlikely this would happen anyway so I imagine to get that far he'd have to get fairly popular with the general public.

If Sanders does very well in the primary, Clinton might pick a more liberal running mate. Someone younger than Sanders with less baggage, but with an appeal to his supporters.

That's a mostly good point.

Technically, Hillary didn't want to be vetted. She said she'd accept being Vice President, but not if she had to compete with anyone else for it.

But Sanders is unlikely to do as well as Hillary, so it's a moot point.

As others have mentioned, Obama wasn't forced to pick Hillary, so the answer is probably no.

I don't think Sanders would want anything to do with Clinton's campaign beyond the tepid endorsement he gives to every Dem nominee for President.

Hillary, however, would have probably been forced to pick Obama if she had pulled it out.

Sanders is probably more powerful as junior Senator for Vermont than he would be as a neutered number two for Clinton.
