A Very Important And Extremely Interesting Map of the Results By Proportions of the Vote and By RegionTM

If the 650 seats were first of all allocated by region based on how many votes were actually cast in the election, and then allocated by party based on their overall share of the vote in each region.  So, the higher the turnout, the more total seats awarded to that region.

Obviously there's no way to factor in tactical voting or parties that didn't run candidates everywhere, but this is just for my own amusement anyway.

N.B. Buckingham messes everything up, so all the votes in that constituency were thrown out.  Sorry Buckingham, but you don't have a real MP anyway so sucks to be you.

I think there has been alot of discussion about this actually, namely how different things would be if Britain had PR.  France too would have quite a different parliament if they had PR.

You don't say?  I thought 'Britain-with-PR' was an entirely original idea.

Two things:

(1)  Apart from Northern Ireland, none of the regional totals were particularly close.  The next closest region was Yorkshire and the Humber, which Labour won by 6.5%.

(2)  If Britain had used an American-style Electoral College (winner of each region receiving EC votes equal to the number of Westminster constituencies plus two) the results would have been Cameron 312, Miliband 281, Sturgeon 61 and Robinson 20.  If Labour had won West Midlands, then it would be President Miliband (342-251-61-20).  But if Britain used this system, neither Party leader would have left the West Midlands during the entire campaign.
