Thought this was pretty interesting, includes county and town level data.

I've been waiting years for pre-1980 town data for New England. Homely Cooking had a map thread once but I've never seen the actual numbers.

Dave was nice enough to add 1988 Presidential data for Putnam and Dutchess Counties in NY though.

The new Pennsylvania town/borough results are great too.

He is almost certainly referring to this.

Thank you! Years of waiting for pre-1980 numbers ends today.

Its funny how extremely Republican the smaller towns in CT were. Some were nearly 90% for Eisenhower. Roosevelt & Kennedy lost most of them too. But mill/factory towns used to be more Democratic than most are now.

These days aside from the biggest cities (and Bloomfield), no town is ever more than 65% for one party, at least since 1992.

Those results have been on the Secretary of the State's website for at least five years. (I was a little surprised to see this thread referring to them - I assumed that the existence of this information was well known.)

When I was a student at the University of Connecticut, I found records of municipality-detailed election results dating back to about 1848 at the Homer Babbidge library in Storrs.

I never thought to look there. I just assumed the data would end up on the Atlas eventually. And maybe it will. Those numbers would look even better with blue & red swing maps.

Bridgeport is probably more then 65% Democrat.

Bridgeport is the largest city in the state. I was referring to smaller towns.

There are a few exceptions - Salisbury, Cornwall and Mansfield (UConn) on the Democratic side, and the Gold Coast towns on the Republican side.

Thank you for calling it by the correct name. If I have to tell one more person that Storrs isn't a town, but a neighborhood within Mansfield......

What is the deal with Hartland? Romney did better there than Bush I in '88! The last few elections its been like a little piece of Oklahoma or Forsyth County right here in CT.

Most people complain about carpetbaggers but thank God for the New York weekenders voting in western Litchfield County, where their vote can make a difference, rather than NYC. Its too bad the political stain of The Valley now stretches from Winsted to Shelton though. I don't know if its because of social conservatism or just relative poverty compared to the Gold Coast.

I worked in Hartland for a few days last year. It's probably unique in New England for its very large, conservative, Lutheran Norwegian population. It's a rural town with quite low income compared to neighboring Granby, and its rural conservatism has never wavered in the town's history. The town has never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate - not even for FDR and not even for LBJ.

I'm still waiting for town results for primary elections (especially presidential primaries).
