This is a movie I have always wanted to see but heard it's not the brightest/happiest film to watch. It's still the one and probably only X rated film to win Best Picture and made a career for Jon Voight.

I'm considering watching it soon. Has anyone seen it? As good as it's reputation or is it overrated?

I found it boring for the most part.  Seeing the early 70s NYC is nice.

Definitely a great film, yes it does have a downbeat arc, but I found it a poignant allegory of the decline of the rust belt and the rise of the sunbelt that was beginning to be felt in the early 70s.
