If you need it after a year, you're kaput.

PHOENIX — Confronting a $1 billion budget deficit, Arizona's Republican-led Legislature has reduced the lifetime limit for welfare recipients to the shortest window in the nation.

Low-income families on welfare will have their benefits cut off after just 12 months.

As a result, the Arizona Department of Economic Security will drop at least 1,600 families — including more than 2,700 children — from the state's federally funded welfare program when the budget year begins in July.

If children need to suffer to pay for tax cuts, so be it.

Is their goal to make self-deportation a reality?
I know I would self-deport from Arizona at this rate.

Do Republicans really think sacrificing the poor will solve all our fiscal and budget problems?

You mean what can cause a person to lose their benefits besides receiving them for the maximum length? Basically any time that someone stops meeting the eligibility criteria (an increase in household income, moving to another state, etc).

Might as well just scrap it all completely at this point, such a worthless benefits system isn't the administrative costs for AZ.

That's the general idea, yes.

And to think the AZGOP is trying their best to game the electoral system so those bums can't be thrown out of office even if a majority votes against them.

The idea of lifetime limits on social assistance is totally insane and evil. Even human turd Mike Harris didn't go that far when he junked Ontario's welfare system in the 1990s

No, but it will supply plenty of ultra-cheap labor.

What do you propose someone do if they find themselves spending more than twelve months over the course of their life in a minimum wage job that doesn't allow them to afford food or housing or healthcare?

See, this is why raising minimum wage is good!

I think having a strict time limit is a bad idea. There is never a one size fits all solution. Reviewing the case after 12 months and terminating the benefits if it isn't entirely necessary to provide them is fine, but there will be plenty of cases where someone is doing everything they can and will be totally screwed if they just suddenly lose their benefits after 12 months. In those cases, it'd almost have been better not to get the benefits at all.

Sure it is ideal that it is a temporary aid, but there are too many factors to consider to set uniform hard deadlines.

I don't know what the cost of living in Arizona is, but here in South Carolina, while it would be rather spartan, it is possible for a single person to obtain adequate food, housing, and healthcare on a full-time minimum wage job.

The problem is that you would be in South Carolina.
