You've got to be kidding. Is Israel basically Apartheid South Africa now?

At least in the South, blacks got to ride at the back of the bus.

Bibi's pulled the program. Probably not out of genuine tolerance, however; Israel may be kicked out of FIFA soon for their system of apartheid, and launching something so explicitly oppressive and racist as segregated buses at this time (when the FIFA commissioner is visiting the country) won't bode well for their soccer team.

This was floated last year also, and also failed spectacularly. Basically more of Boogie's pandering.

Pretty sure Bibi doesn't care about FIFA. If he cares about anything, he knows that it would take just one member of his coalition with a shred of decency to bring the whole thing down. His right flank doesn't quite pose the same threat.

I agree though, it isn't about tolerance.

Meanwhile, FIFA has offered to play a "peace" match between Israel and the Palestinians in Switzerland.  Bibi has already agreed.  Let's wait and see what the peace loving Palestinians do......

when their leaders again torpedo any chance to move forward.

It'd be more interesting to hear your comment on the matter here instead of something totally irrelevant.

I have none, don't know much about it and it seems to be resolved anyway.

(and I was the third person to mention FIFA)

Oh, right. Well I suppose openly segregationist policy plans (that, yes, have been cancelled for now) aren't anything to have an opinion on or be concerned about. A peace football match, on the other hand, is definitely something that shows Israel's desire for peace. Can't think of anything that would show that deep desire more.

Indeed.  Well, I'm sure there is something MORE which could be done, but since the other side thinks a freaking soccer game is "a crime against humanity" (even if it's just little kids playing) there really isn't much more that can be done until there is a change in their mindset.

I don't think it's so much that Bibi cares about being involved in international soccer, more that he wants to avoid being suspended - it seems trivial, but it's something FIFA has only done for Yugoslavia and apartheid South Africa before, and that's not a club Bibi seems eager to join.

They did not ask for a match. They asked for something much more basic - and more relevant to this thread. And nobody has offered it to them. And, BTW, they have said many times, they would withdraw their request for the vote, if that something is offerred. Perhaps, you would share your views on that request?

The head of FIFA has already explicitly said there are no grounds to suspend Israel - something they didn't even consider doing to Iran when they butchered hundreds of peaceful protestors in the streets and hung gay teenagers - so any further action on that front will only discredit FIFA, much like "Zionism is Racism" discredited the UN.

As for the actual article - asshole proposes bad policy, government looks into it and doesn't put it into effect.

This entire thing is sketchy as hell. An anonymous official in the Defense department announces this policy, claiming to have the agreement of the Defense minister, only for the Prime Minister to come out only hours later and announce "No, this isn't happening"?

I hope Israel is investigating exactly what happened here. There's a couple of options, neither of which really make the government look like they have a handle on things.

There were much easier ways to avoid being suspended- giving the Palestinian soccer team what they asked for, freedom of movement for the players, etc. Bibi's smart enough to know this. He's also smart enough that FIFAGate wouldn't bring down his government. This probably could.

Yep, it's mob rule.

Guess we'll see how much rank hypocrisy they want to embrace.

Ya'alon appears to be dedicated to bringing down Bibi's government. Note that nobody's said the program has been ended; only "suspended".

The asshole happens to be the Defense Minister. Happy, at least, you are willing to acknowledge he is an asshole.

Yeah, at first it was just "anonymous official", but if the Defense Minister is responsible, that's a more serious issue.

Still, Netanyahu determines policy, not him. And Netanyahu is a smart man who wouldn't sign on to something like this.

And Netanyahu has just appointed this asshole to the Defense post.  BTW, that is the position from which the asshole in question has nearly absolute control over the lives of Palestinians in the territories (unless the PM is willing to step in, of course). BTW, from what we know, on any "assholeness" measure one can think of, this guy is well under the median in the present government. Which Mr. Netanyahu-the-adult has just appointed.

Not really any argument with this, but as this showed, Netanyahu is willing to step in when he goes over the line.

If this policy goes into effect at any point, that's a different discussion, but that's not the case now.

I am just reminding you, that Netanyahu CHOSE this guy to be the person who controls pretty much every aspect of day-to-day live of every single Palestinian in a big chunk of the West Bank (Zones C and B). Are you expecting to even hear of every outrage that is being done there?

Yes, Mr. Netanyahu will interfere when things become a public scandal. But he, obviously, intends everything else to go through. And, as long as you do not hear about it, you will sleep sound thinking Netanyahu is a nice guy.
